This weeks photographers SEO tip - file sizes
Jan 29, 2024 5:55 pm
Hi ,
It's time for another SEO tip of the week!
What size should photos be on your site?
This is a question I receive ALL THE TIME, and the simple answer is: As small as you can make them while still retaining excellent quality for most monitor sizes.
To do this, choose a max width of roughly 2000 px or less (depends on where the photo is on your page, if it's a small image, go smaller!)
Then export the file at as low of a quality as you can where it still looks great. Maybe a 6 or 7. Try a few exports and compare.
Keep in mind that your audience may be using 4k monitors. Check your image on larger screens as well if it's full width on the site.
The simplest approach is to use a tool like Shortpixel to do the work for you (if on Wordpress it will do it all automatically). You can also use it to export images at the best sizing for your site even if you aren't on Wordpress.
That's it for today. I'll be back in your inbox soon.
Have a great week!
