The problem with having low expecatations
Feb 09, 2026 2:50 pm
Good morning, ,
I've heard my wife say that the secret to having a long and happy marriage is to lower your expecations.
Not sure how I feel about that. But having expectations that are low can set you up for a life of mediocrity.
Here's what I think the difference is: My expectations for what my wife does can be low. Because I'm not the boss of her.
I am, however, the boss of me. So my expectations for me can be whatever I decide. And if I keep them low, I may never achieve what I'm capable of.
If I raise my standards for the things I have control over, then I can dictate the level of life and lifestyle I'm willing to accept. So, here is a short, and not-at-all comprehesive list of things I will no longer tolerate:
- Hitting the Snooze button
- Saying "yes" to things that I don't truly want
- Waiting until I feel ready
- Starting the day without creating a plan
- Mindlessly scrolling after 11pm or before 7am
- Leaving to-do list items undone
- Complaining
Call me out on this if I slip.
What are you no longer willing to tolerate? We're 40 days into the new year. Let's keep building.
You've got this!
Ken
