History Wednesday: Daily Life in 3rd Century Rome

Apr 09, 2025 6:01 am

Hello,

Do you like historical fiction? I can't get enough of it! I love how it transports me to different times and places, immersing me in the lives of characters who lived through significant events. It's like a time machine for the imagination! 🧭

Something that has always bothered me in movies that feature Roman history is the fashion. If you look at a film about the 1980s 🧑🏾‍🎤 and they are wearing clothing from the 1960s ☮︎, you'll immediately notice. But in movies about ancient Rome, the clothing is the same no matter the time period. The toga is the same in 500 BC as in 100 AD. Surely that can't be right!

But that's my rant done.

I want to dedicate Wednesdays to fascinating stories from history, and there are many of them! 📜

Today, I'd like to share the story of daily life in 3rd-century Rome. 🏺 This is about 200 years after Julius Caesar and 200 years before the fall of the Western Roman Empire. At this time, Rome was at its height, and the empire was vast.

Rome had a population of around 1 million people and was the largest city in the world at that time. It was a melting pot of cultures, with people from all over the empire living and working there. 🏛️
