5 tips for marketing to teachers

Here are 5 quick tips for marketing your education product to teachers.


In most cases, these refer to software-based edtech products, but they can apply to other services, books, or other products, too:


1) Make your messaging about what your product or service allows teachers to do on their own (not what you will do for them)


2) If you want to reach teachers for testing your idea, getting "ambassadors," or getting initial exposure, go to free Edcamp events. Host a session about your product's area of education. Then, don't sell at all. Just talk to the teachers.


3) When you have a successful customer/client experience, you can ask for a testimonial. Get the testimonial to describe the doubt the teacher had before trying your product. OR Get the testimonial to explain the transformation that occurred after using your product. "Product X is great!" testimonials are a waste.


4) To encourage teacher-to-teacher referrals make the message be about the way sharing your product will be a generous act for the teacher. But don't forget to make sure they get something real and valuable out of it, too.


5) Teachers often don't realize how your product can solve their problem. They need to see lots of examples how it happens. In your marketing, describe all the various ways teachers have used your product, even the "off label" ways.


The last one can be a mystery to some people. But in most cases, if you have testimonials or simply feedback in the form of support tickets, emails, and interviews with your users, you have everything you need to share the social proof to get teachers signing up to try your product, or logging back in if they forgot about you. These messages are especially powerful for the emails you send.
