ecommerce stole my soul

An EduHustles teacher recently wrote back to me with this feedback on why she is searching for education-related part time work:

1) I signed up because I am looking for other opportunities to make some extra money while I work on some other business projects.

2) I had an e-commerce business that did well but was too expensive, and I allowed it to steal my soul and passion. The business model was good, I would rather apply it to my knowledge, passion, and expertise.

This is common in education.

Folks who have had success in other areas, but don't feel the fulfillment in that area, and therefore come back to, or stick with education.

  • I've seen this happen at the teacher level, where people work in their field (say, science), then come back to the classroom.
  • I've seen it happen at the school counseling or school psychologist level where people go into other areas like a private practice then return to schools.
  • And it's definitely happened at the entrepreneurial or business level where founders or sales people specifically say they want to concentrate their work on K12 education because of the impact they will be having.

And while you can look with somewhat of a smirk at a teacher claiming that another type of work would "steal their soul," there's one more way to re-frame it:

Focusing on a kind of work that gives you meaning, and not just money, is .a super power. It's a whole lot easier to stay motivated on something when it matters to you.

As I've mentioned before, that's why I like working with education businesses. There's a higher percentage of people who give a damn.
