Cosnistency
Aug 29, 2023 4:02 pm
This week is a lengthy one, so get comfortable. I often hear people say they struggle with consistency. I frequently get asked, "DK, how do I stay consistent on Instagram?" My response has always been and still is, "Do you genuinely want to maintain consistency on Instagram, or do you just like the idea of it?" Most individuals enjoy the concept but aren't willing to put in the effort. They possess the capability but have failed to regulate themselves. I wish I could snap my fingers and bestow consistency upon you. However, even if I had that power, I wouldn't do it for you. You might wonder why—simply put, because you must desire it for yourself more than I desire it for you. Shifting from daydreaming about your goals to taking actionable steps that propel you towards them is crucial.
You need to want it for yourself more than I want it for you, as only then will you be willing to do whatever it takes to reach your desired position. Often, we blame our tools, trends, younger generations (millennials blaming Gen Z), and the cycle persists. What if we could do whatever it takes to achieve our desires? Ultimately, it all comes down to consistency. I'll initiate this discussion on consistency with the hope that you'll join me tomorrow for the concluding part of our conversation.
Let's not consult the Oxford Dictionary or dictionary.com; instead, let's refer to DK's dictionary for the meaning of consistency. Consistency entails keeping your promises to yourself consistently, not just once, but every time. Each day, we tell ourselves half-truths (let's avoid labelling them as lies) about what we plan to do, yet often fail to uphold these commitments. We declare a desire to achieve something simple, but we seek the outcomes without being willing to put in the effort—we're, well, what's the word? Lazy.
Why am I being so direct today? If I'm not forthright, I'm not providing you with what you deserve: a wake-up call. It's time to confront some challenging questions. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and let's begin. My sole rule is this: Be brutally honest with yourself. As I consistently emphasise, there's nothing wrong with your current position, but it's problematic if you remain in the same place once you've discovered the truth.
Let's reflect on your recent commitments to yourself.
- When was the last time you found yourself yielding to the temptations of procrastination?
- During those moments when you made these commitments, did you harbor a deep sense of awareness that you might not honor them?
- If that's the case, why did you make those commitments in the first place?
- Have you managed to stay true to them, and if so, what motivated you to do so? Alternatively, if you haven't followed through, when was the most recent instance when you allowed procrastination to take the reins?
- Consider times when you opted for a different activity instead of focusing on what truly matters to you. What was the driving force behind these choices?
- Why do you repeatedly set goals, even though you're cognizant that you won't persevere until the end?
These questions really dig deep and make us take a good look at ourselves. Confronting them directly is like treating ourselves with respect and acknowledging our potential to grow. It's time to push away any urge to avoid and instead really explore our motivations and actions.
As we navigate through this journey of introspection, remember that honesty is like our guiding star. Being truthful might be uncomfortable, even a bit unsettling, but it's like a mirror that shows us our inner truths without any distortion. There's no shame in where you are right now; it's more about understanding the path you're on and the direction it's pointing to.
Procrastination, that tempting and seemingly harmless distraction, can slowly wear away the bridge that connects our intentions with our achievements. Figuring out when and why we stumble is really important to overcome this challenge. Is it the quick satisfaction that lures us or the desire to avoid discomfort? Uncovering these triggers empowers us to break their hold over our progress.
Now, let's dive into the puzzle of why we set goals that we know we won't achieve. Is it that we're overestimating our abilities or trying to meet societal expectations? Or maybe it's a form of self-sabotage that we're not even aware of? These questions expose the inner forces at play and give us a chance to change our approach.
The connection between leading ourselves and leading others is like a complex web. Effective leadership comes from practicing self-discipline, being accountable, and having resilience. Just as a strong building needs a solid foundation, guiding others requires a sturdy self-guidance system.
Let's keep moving on this journey, aiming for growth instead of focusing too much on being perfect. Tomorrow, we'll explore strategies and insights that can bring more consistency into our lives. Until then, take these reflections to heart, because they're like the seeds that can help us grow and change.
Wrapping up, the idea of consistency holds a lot of potential to shape our lives positively. But, guess what? Our conversation doesn't stop here.
