What’s new?
Now, you know I came to the East Coast for Swirling the Big Easy. What you may not know is I bought a one-way ticket because I didn’t know how much time I would spend catching up with my family. So, storytime.
I’m staying with my dad who is retired. Before we even left for New Orleans, this man was already looking to leave on his next trip. Keep in mind, he visited me from after Christmas to March before he left to go to Mexico for a month. He’s been home for five months and was antsy to bounce. So when I arrived, he started looking for flights to Jamaica.
Of course, I was like, bet. It’s been too many years since I did a proper visit, and I always discover new family when I’m there. I swear my dad’s generation just likes to throw some new people at me and say this is my uncle’s second wife’s daughter’s niece. Like the tree isn’t confusing af as is. Anyway, we went down, and I’d never experienced heat like I did these past weeks, and Jamaica is experiencing a drought. What I learned is that I’m soft. I need my cold showers and fans everywhere. While I was sweating up a storm, my fam was like, nah, we good.
But my fam spoiled me with all the good stuff they planted. I stuffed my face with yam, breadfruit, ackee, saltfish, manish water, june plum, guava, sugar cane, and the avocados… When I tell you it was avocado season, I ain’t joking. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks were all avocado time.
But I digress. The main reason I wanted to share my trip with you is that during this time, I visited my mother’s grave. If you read Inevitable, there is a scene where René and Nico go to Jamaica and pay their respects to her ancestors. This was taken from a tradition we follow today. Before visiting the family graveyard, we picked up a bottle of brandy, and “shared” a drink with everyone. Seeing the McFarlanes who came before is always a humbling experience. Knowing that some lived to over a hundred and the stories they could tell has always been fascinating to me.
Now that I've returned, why is it so damn cold? I need to go back to my island ASAP. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this little tidbit and what inspired a scene close to my heart in Inevitable.

There are only four more days before Savage Bosses Anthology releases. Fifteen stories will keep you sleepless until you finish every one. In my contribution, you get to visit Douglas, CO again. This time there’s a new savage in town, and he’s got to deal with a woman who wants him to hurt the way he hurt her when she was younger. http://books2read.com/savagebosses
