Market View: Oil & Geopolitics

Mar 03, 2026 12:55 pm

Hi ,

You may have seen the sharp rise in oil prices tied to escalating conflict in the Middle East. Here’s not only what’s happening, but also how some global analysts are interpreting the broader geopolitical context.

Market & Geopolitical Background

• Oil prices have surged as tensions escalate following U.S. and allied strikes on Iran. These actions have disrupted tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route accounting for about 20% of global oil shipments.

• China, the world’s largest crude importer, sources a significant portion of its oil from this region. Disruptions to these flows have already led to refinery run cuts in China.

My Take — A Geopolitical Interpretation

Some analysts see these events as part of a broader strategic competition between the United States and China. For example:

• China has publicly voiced energy security concerns over U.S. military actions in Iran and Venezuela, two countries that were sources of cheaper crude.

• Commentators argue the U.S. actions, while officially framed as national security operations, heighten pressure on China’s energy access and strategic position

• This comes at a time when U.S.–China diplomacy is active, including planned trade talks and high-level meetings later in March, meaning the timing of oil market disruption may have implications beyond energy prices.

In other words, beyond the immediate market reaction, this conflict also plays into geoeconomic competition between major powers, especially around energy security and influence in global supply chains.

Bottom Line for Investors

Geopolitics and commodities are deeply intertwined. While the current situation is a shock and not yet a full crisis, how these strategic tensions play out, including upcoming diplomatic engagements, could influence risk sentiment, inflation expectations, and portfolio positioning over the medium term.

As always, I monitor these developments closely and am happy to discuss what it means for your portfolio.

Warm regards,

Zest chia
