Confession, I didn't do party bags for my kids parties this year

Hiya,
Today I want to talk about party bags. Love them or despise them, party bags seem to have become an expected component of kids parties.
When you're planning a party for your little love, you might feel pressured to give out party bags to all of the kids at the party. Why is that? Possibly because they are given out at all the parties your children are invited too? Maybe it feels like other parents will judge you for not giving out party bags?
What does the party bag represent anyway? Is it a "thanks for coming to my party" gift? If so, wouldn't a simple "thank you" from the birthday boy/girl to guests as they leave achieve this? Is it because people feel overwhelmed by the generous gifts their child has received and feel like they need to give something in return?? If so, perhaps we need to address our own inability to gracefully accept generosity, compliments, help from others, without feeling some kind of obligation.
In previous years I have chosen party favours for my kids birthday parties carefully so they are plastic free, reusable items or something edible that won't be wasted. This year I simply decided not to give anything out at all! And guess what - the world didn't end, hardly any of the kids even noticed and the parents were relieved not to have more "stuff" thrust upon them.
How do you approach the party bag conundrum? Reply now and let me know!
Cheerio,
Michelle
