Conscious Culture 032: False Authority
Jul 21, 2021 10:38 pm
Welcome to Conscious Culture, a weekly newsletter full of interesting reads for curious, intelligent people who want to sharpen their minds
This week we're talking about false authority, social status, starting in the middle, and the difference between artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning.
There is also a Notion database that shows you how to say hello in 70 different languages in Fun Stuff this week.
Feel free to hit reply and let me know what you think.
"A false authority is someone whose supposed authority in a certain domain is substantially flawed, generally because their credentials or expertise are irrelevant, dubious, insufficient, or missing entirely."
"The beginning of wisdom about social status is learning to distinguish its two (and only two) primary forms: dominance and prestige. These are, as one research paper puts it, the "two ways to the top."
If dominance is the kind of status we get from intimidating others, prestige is the kind of status we get from doing impressive things or having impressive traits or skills.
"When we treat “the beginning” as something sacred, we give it more power than it deserves. The beginning can start in the middle, or even at the end."
"While artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning are trending tech terms that we hear everywhere these days, there are major misconceptions about what these words actually mean. Some people use these popular tech buzzwords interchangeably. Here’s why they’re wrong."
"Making Friends with Machine Learning was an internal-only Google course specially created to inspire beginners and amuse experts. Today, it is available to everyone!"

"Enrich your content with relevant keywords and optimize it for both users and search engines."

"This Notion wiki is intended for those looking to dabble in a new language, or maybe you simply want to learn how to greet others in 70 different ways."
Quote of the Week
"Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves"
— Carl Jung
