Coach ,

Last week we focused on teaching/coaching methods that maximize the meeting room.  We touched on how the meeting room helps build relationships which in turn feeds the culture.

This week we present a series which goes deeper into the relationships and examines the strategies, methods, and tools that coaches use to do that.

For Texas Defensive Passing Game Coordinator and Secondary Coach Terry Joseph, there are three components that form the foundation of how he builds relationships with his players:

Coach Joseph makes a point that players know more than what we give them credit for and they want feedback.  They want it packaged in a certain way.  In addition, the players today want a voice and Coach Joseph explains how that is part of the process and how meeting these needs gives the players ownership in the relationship here:

Coach Joseph knows how big of a part that trust plays in the relationship and he wants his players to understand that trust must be worked on.  He believes that trust is such an important component of culture that he has a system for evaluating it so he can help build trust on the team. He explains it here (click on image for video):

Once he gathers this information, he is able to have conversations with individual players about who they trust and how much their teammates trust them. The evaluation helps him then foster those relationships because he knows more about how teammates feel about each other and he can raise the overall level of trust within the team.

Investment in relationships now will pay big dividends now and in the future which will show under the lights this fall.

Always be growing!
