Coach ,

It’s Super Bowl LVII weekend and in honor of that we are sharing coaching points from the recent Super Bowl Champions who have presented at the C.O.O.L. Clinic.

Here’s some coaching points and drills that you can use to create elite run blockers and pass protectors.

Super Bowl LVI Champion - Kevin Carberry

Getting a High Leg or Two High Legs on Duo Combination is important to the success of the play. It creates a solid double team here they can lift the defender off the ground. LA Rams OL Coach Kevin Carberry explains it here (click on images for videos):

Super Bowl LV Champion - Joe Gilbert

In 2020 that was the key to the Bucs success and a Super Bowl win. Offensive Line Coach Joe Gilbert spoke about “Fundamentals and Techniques in Protecting Tom Brady” at the COOL Clinic.

Specifically, the offensive tackles need to do their job. Coach Gilbert believes the three components for an OT’s success are “Set Line, Punch, and Mirror.” (click on image for video):

Keeping the hands tight is crucial in the punch. Using a slightly deflated volleyball helps train the tight hands to be able to execute a tight hands punch. He explains that in this video (click on image for video):

Super Bowl LIV Champion - Andy Heck

For Partick Mahomes this Sunday, big lanes essentially turn it into a 7-on-7 for Mahomes; it’s something the Eagles don’t want to see.

Of course, after the understanding of the “what,” it comes down to “how,” and to Coach Heck a big part of that is body position.

In this video, he shares several drills he uses to teach correct body position. These are drills that can be utilized in the off-season (click on image for video):

Knowing where to help and for how long can help create the clean pocket. Coach Heck emphasizes the importance of “holding space.”  What does that mean? It means that, for example, a Center who is sliding left but has no gap threat will not just punch to his right and move away. He will sit and keep an arm in to “hold the space” keeping his eyes on his gap and going there when he needs to go. Coach Heck illustrates that with this clip (click on image for video):

Coach Heck gave a thorough presentation at the 2022 C.O.O.L Clinic.

Super Bowl XLV Champion - Joe Philbin

Joe Philbin moved on from the Cowboys, but will continue to be known as an elite OL Coach. He feels that 5 man protection is generally similar across all levels. He shares his principles of pass protection and objectives in this video (click on image for video):
