Precision, Power, and Tempo: How Texas Tech’s Offensive Staff is Fueling a Top-10 Run

Through four weeks, Texas Tech sits at 4-0, ranked No. 11 nationally, boasting the nation’s No. 2 offense at 573 yards per game and No. 2 scoring attack at 52 points per game.
With a showdown against fellow unbeaten Houston looming, the Red Raiders’ success is no accident. It’s the product of a coaching staff that has aligned philosophy with execution—marrying precision in the passing game, physicality in the run game, and tempo in the quick screen game.
Assistant Head Coach / Passing Game Coordinator / Wide Receivers Coach Justin Johnson, Run Game Coordinator / Tight Ends Coach Josh Cochran, and Offensive Coordinator / Quarterbacks Coach Mack Leftwich each bring their expertise to a system that stresses defenses in every way.
Winning at the Line: Receiver Releases with Purpose
For Johnson, the battle begins at the line of scrimmage. His receivers aren’t just running routes—they’re winning reps through preparation, communication, and detail
“Upon a release, we always want to approach the line with a plan,” Johnson said. “We drill it to be reactionary. Defenses disguise, they punch. Our guys have to know what to do after they get punched.”
He emphasizes a part-part-whole teaching model, breaking each release into its smallest components—footwork, angles, hand placement—before stitching it into the bigger picture. Every release is tied to progression, timing, and game context.
As Johnson reminds his players: it’s not about just “being open.” It’s a race against the pass rush. The release has to serve the offense’s timing, or the play dies in the pocket.
Counter: Setting the Tone with Physical Football
While Johnson sharpens the edges of the passing game, Cochran grounds the Red Raiders in a run scheme that travels anywhere—counter
“Why counter? Many reasons,” Cochran said. “It stresses the defense with all the variations. It’s good versus any front or blitz. And it is as violent as it gets.”
Texas Tech runs counter out of every personnel grouping—10, 11, 12, even 23—changing pullers, alignments, and keys so defenses can’t predict who’s coming.
For the offensive line, assignments stay simple: displace down linemen, kick with the first puller, wrap with the second. The play forces linebackers into fast flow, which opens RPO and screen opportunities.
Cochran demands precision—backs waiting until the quarterback secures the snap, pullers staying in tight relationship, and violent finishes with “elbows tight, thumbs up,” striking and pulling defenders in close to maintain control.
More than scheme, counter builds mentality. Every collision between a pulling guard and a defensive end reinforces Texas Tech’s physical identity.
Quick Touches and Screens: Fueling Tempo and Confidence
For Leftwich, the mission is tempo, and quick touches are the spark
“These are great drive starters,” Leftwich explained. “If we get one first down, we’re getting points on that drive. Quick touches and perimeter screens are easy ways to steal yards and crank up the tempo.”
The Red Raiders’ philosophy is simple:
- Guarantee touches for their best players.
- Create easy completions to build quarterback rhythm.
- Stay on schedule when penalties or negative plays strike.
Leftwich, a former quarterback himself, knows the value of rhythm. When his QB struggles, he dials up a quick screen or perimeter throw to reset confidence. On the perimeter, receivers are challenged to prove toughness by blocking in space.
Paired with tempo, the looks are simple, the reads are fast, and defenses have no time to disguise.
Precision, Power, and Tempo
Texas Tech’s offensive surge is no accident—it’s the convergence of Johnson’s technical receiver teaching, Cochran’s physical run game identity, and Leftwich’s tempo-driven quick game.
The result: a unit that sits near the top of the nation in production and scoring, with the chance to prove even more against a fellow unbeaten in Houston.
Detail, adaptability, and toughness—those are the pillars of a system built not just to win games, but to challenge every defense it faces.
Always be growing!
