Coach ,
We have been fortrunate to have a number of great FCS coaches present in our clinics, and their offenses are at the top of the rankings in 2023.
Today we take a tip from each coach that they shared in their presentation. Though the types of offense utilized vary greatly, the coaching points are universal.
#2 Davidson 485.2 ypg - Formations are Cheap
Davidson runs an option based offense, but like any good offense, they are able to stress the defense through formations. In this video, Offensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator Vince Munich shares their philosophy on formation use.
#3 Montana State 482.2 ypg - O-Line Drives the Bus
We highlighted the Bobcat offense directed by Offensive Coordinator Taylor Housewright earlier this week pointing out that he wants the offense to be “QB friendly.” However, in Montana State’s offense, the “O-Line Drives the Bus.” Everything is built around what they can do and that starts with making sure they get the right OL on the bus. He explains that here:
#6 Monmouth 455.4 ypg - Create Explosive Opportunities
Monmouth Offensive Coordinator Jeff Gallo believes in taking shots and is sure to get one scripted early in the game. The best way to create those shots is with play action. Play action has multiple benefits which Coach Gallo explains in this video:

#7 Austin Peay 453.7 ypg - Hunting for Points
One of the principles of the Governors offense is all about executing plays at an extremely high level. This means that the playbook must be comprehensive and adaptable, allowing for a wide range of plays to be called quickly and efficiently. The key is to make the game plan as simple as possible for the players while still being complex enough to challenge the opposing defense. Head Coach Scotty Walden explains it in this video:
#8 Fordham 450.0 ypg - Pressure Relief
With all the blitz, pressure, sims, and line movements in today’s game, having a scheme that can handle it all is important. For Head Coach Joe Conlin and his Fordham Rams, the inside zone is that scheme. In this video he explains how the inside zone is utliized to help the defeat the pressure that they will see.
Use inside Zone to Defeat Pressure
#9 NDSU 446.8 - Marry it All Up
For North Dakota State Offensive Coordinator Tyler Roehl, who runs a big personnel, run dominant offense, getting big plays down the field comes from being sure that formations, runs and passes are married together. As he says, they must look and sound the same. In this video he illustrates how they marry everything up to get the fullback wide open in the flat and take a chunk out of the defense.

#11 SDSU 438.7 ypg - You Get What You Emphasize
We all have seen the elaborate goal boards and at some point we have probably all had more than necessary. For Zach Lujan, Offensive Coordinator for South Dakota State, their goal board is thin and it’s built around the premise of “You get what you emphasize.” To be successful on offense, you just can’t emphasize too many things or nothing will really be emphasized. He explains their goals and emphasis in this video:
The schemes behind successful offenses will vary greatly. It’s not the scheme that makes it successful, it is the beliefs behind the schemes and how all of it is brought together to attack a defense. The tips shared here can be used successfuly in every type of offense. They key is understanding how everything works and fits together for your specific situation.
Good luck as you finish up the season or as you wrap things up to get ready for the next one.
Always be growing!
