⏰ The Clock is Ticking on Getting Your Quarterback Game Ready

Coach ,

I am sure as camp begins, you feel the clock ticking on the time you have to get your QB game ready.

Any coaching point that helps you in that regard is worth exploring, and we share three today from QB coaches from the NFL, FBS, and small college.

Simplify the Technique

Penn State OC/QB Coach Mike Yurcich is good at being able to focus on things that matter the most and simplify the way that he communicates that with his QB. Here is an example of his “right foot under right armpit” technique:

Show them it Matters

Jake Peetz, QB Coach for the LA Rams, show how drills that have the coach clapping to signal a throw are applicable when you show how those things matter in game by demonstrating on game film.  He makes the point in this video that the clap in a drill is much like an indicator step on a route that signals the QB to  throw.  He shows Derek Carr executing the technique.

Maximize Reps

This next tip is for the QB Coach.  RPO requires plenty of reps. Kyle Ohradzansky, offensive coordinator at Findlay likes stripping away everything but the essentials in order to get 25-30 extra reps every time he uses this RPO period. These reps are critical because as Coach Ohradzanksy mentions, he can only get 5-7 of these in a 11v11 scout team setting. He explains the set up and coaching points in this video:

Being efficient with your language, your teaching and coaching points, and with your indy time will help slow that clock down for you, well maybe not, but at least it will help you maximize your use of time.

Best of luck as you get your QB ready for game 1.

Always be growing!
