The Defender's Nightmare: The RPO
Forget the playbook for a second. Imagine an offense that adapts in real-time, keeping defenses guessing and exploiting weaknesses on every snap.
Of Course, that’s the RPO which has revolutionized offense over the last decade. The transformation comes in the way it empowers the quarterback. This innovative approach has gone well beyond just a fad; it's a strategic weapon that can elevate any style of offense to the next level, leaving defenses scrambling and points piling up.
In our on demand clinic today, the coaches involved have unlocked the potential of the RPO and made it the major feature of their offenses.
Dave Clawson - Why RPO?
Leading the way today and talking about the addition of the RPO, its usage, and the success they have had with it is Wake Forest Head Coach Dave Clawson.
The RPO can be seen as an "addition by subtraction" for offenses. While it may not significantly increase the number of home run plays, its true value lies in negating negative plays more effectively.
By keeping the defense guessing with the run-pass option, it takes pressure off a struggling offensive line or pass protection. This tactic becomes particularly beneficial for teams with weaknesses, allowing them to exploit mismatches and find success even when facing limitations.
Ultimately, the RPO prioritizes adaptability and exploiting the best available option, rather than relying on a specific play style. This strategic shift empowers the offense to maximize their strengths and minimize weaknesses, leading to a more dynamic and potentially high-scoring game plan.
Scotty Waldne - RPO’s - Option
Building on the ideas of these plays and showing the reality of variety within teaching points and schemes that you can run within these systems is UTEP Head Coach Scotty Walden.
The beauty of the RPO lies not just in empowering the quarterback with options, but in the vast variety it offers coaches to tailor their offensive scheme. This goes beyond simply giving QBs the choice between run or pass. You can choose slow or fast mesh points, gap or zone blocking schemes, prioritize run or pass based on your offensive line's strengths, or even incorporate QB drops into the system. Additionally, the level of decision-making responsibility can be adjusted. You can trust a veteran QB with full post-snap reads while relying more on pre-snap adjustments for a less experienced player. This incredible flexibility allows coaches to build an RPO offense that perfectly complements their team's unique strengths and weaknesses, maximizing their potential for success.
Joe Moorhead - Creating a System
Understanding the vastness is half the battle with RPO’s and being creative and creating a system that gives your players the best chance to succeed in it is the largest key. Akron Head Coach Joe Moorhead expands upon the options you have in this offense here.
Video: Introduction - Give Read
The sheer versatility of the RPO, as demonstrated in these clips, is a testament to its true potential. It allows coaches to design offenses that range from simple and straightforward to highly complex, catering to various team strengths and player capabilities.
By drawing inspiration from the triple option and extending those concepts to the passing game and adjusting the timing of the quarterback's read, the RPO becomes a truly expansive offensive tool. This adaptability empowers coaches to create unique systems that exploit both offensive strengths and defensive weaknesses, ultimately propelling their teams to the next level.
