Learning from Champions Series - Jenks High School

Coach ,
As we head toward the end of the year, we recognize the coaches and programs that have won a championship as well as share some key ideas that have led to their success.
In Oklahoma, Jenks High School is back on top as they have won another state championship over their arch-rival Union High School.
They had to rally from being down 30-15, but they did that with 30 unanswered points on the way to the 6A Oklahoma state championship.
It’s their 18th state championship in 28 appearances, and for Head Coach Keith Riggs it’s two in a row in four straight appearances since he’s taken over as head coach.
Coach Riggs was an assistant prior to taking over for the late legendary Allan Trimble. He experienced many of those state championships in his time as an assistant, and for him, it’s always been about the little things. In this video he shares how they do goal setting in season

Little Things that Make a Big Difference
A great coaching staff is always a part of what builds a championship program, and Coach Riggs was able to pick up David Alexander who led Broken Arrow High School to a state championship in 2018 as the head coach.
He certainly has a shared philosophy on the little things which he shares in his clinic talk “The Tiger Mile: From 3rd to 1st” where he explained how he helped Broken Arrow to the top. He shares his thoughts on Excellence here (Click on image for video):
As the saying goes, “Defense wins championships,” and the Trojans have a great leader on the defensive side of the ball in defensive coordinator Adam Gaylor.
One of the tools he uses is “Simulated Pressure.”
What is simulated pressure?
- Mainly used on 3rd down calls
- Attack protections
- Give the illusion of overload pressure
- Keep RB in the protection - fewer receivers out, more coverage
- Not looking to be +1, looking to be 1 on 1 getting a rusher to 2nd level of protection
- 2nd or 3rd level rusher (non-traditional rusher)

Jenks High School put on a performance on all sides of the ball on the way to state championship #18.
Congratulations to Jenks and to runner-up Kirk Fridrich and Union HS on an outstanding 2021 season.
We look forward to highlighting more champions from around the country at both the high school and college levels and learning from the ideas they shared that have helped them to the top.
Always be growing!
