Coach ,
As the 2022 Clinic Season wraps up, there are six coaches I am excited to see present at the Angelo Clinic which begins tomorrow. The entire line-up is great!
#1) Rhett Lashlee, Head Coach SMU
Coach Lashlee has returned to SMU as Head Football Coach. He previously served as offensive coordinator for the Mustangs for two seasons, including the record-setting 2019 campaign.
Lashlee, a one-time finalist (2013) and two-time semifinalist (2019, 2020) for the Broyles Award, presented to the nation’s top assistant coach, came back to the Hilltop after two seasons as the Miami Hurricanes’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Lashlee also has the distinction of being the only coach ever nominated for the Broyles Award four different times at four different schools (Arkansas State, Auburn, SMU, Miami).
Now with his chance to call all of the shots, it will be exciting to see what Dallas’s college team does this fall

#2) Jeff Traylor, Head Coach, UTSA
He got his start at the high school level. As a high school football coach (he also coached basketball), Jeff Traylor built his hometown program into a powerhouse, posting a 175-26 record (.871 winning percentage) and led the Gilmer High School to three state titles in five appearances and 12 district crowns. He was a four-time Texas High School Coach of the Year for Class 4A.
Jump ahead to 2022, he’s brought UTSA to the top of Conference USA, finishing 12-2 last season.
This doesn’t come as a surprise to many who know Traylor. Matt Rhule, head coach of the Carolina Panthers said this of him.
“Jeff Traylor is a dynamic, transformational leader who will usher in a bright new era for UTSA football...I look forward to seeing Coach Traylor and his staff bring a championship to San Antonio.”
For Coach Traylor it’s simple. He points to this concept as something he’s made his career on in this video. This one is critical for every program and more importantly for our game to continue to grow:

#3) Ron Roberts, Defensive Coordinator, Baylor
Ron Roberts has become a resource for many defensive coaches around the country, so having the ability to see him present and take part in a Q&A is a huge opportunity.
Here’s Coach Roberts explaining an adjustment to Pistol from 3-4 Base Nickel.

#4) Holmon Wiggins, WR Coach, Alabama
Alabama has had an impressive core of receivers and WR Coach Holmon Wiggins will be on hand to discuss the keys to their WR play.
Of course on top of developing mental intelligence is teaching a mindset that will win in all situations. Holomon Wiggins, WR Coach at Alabama, uses the acronym EDGE to give those players keys to a winning mindset (click on image for video):

#5) Blake Gideon, Safeties Coach, Texas
He played at UT then with the Broncos and the Cardinals before heading into coaching.
An All-Big 12 defensive back at Texas (2008-11) and special teams coordinator at Ole Miss and Houston, Blake Gideon was named safeties coach for the Longhorns on January 22, 2021.
Gideon returns to Austin after spending one season as special teams coordinator at Ole Miss. He helped the Rebels rank 17th nationally in kickoff return defense (17.45 ypr) and 23rd in kickoff returns (23.95).

#6) AJ Smith, OC, Tyler
I met AJ six years ago at AFCA and was impressed by both his football knowledge as well as how innovative he was with his teaching with virtual reality.
Now he’s on the stage at Angelo, and you can be sure to pick up some great ideas from his presentation.
Coach Smith’s Topic at Angelo: Winning Championships with the Air Raid Offense
