Recently appointed as the defensive line coach for Oklahoma State, Randolph brings with him a wealth of expertise garnered over 26 years of coaching, including notable tenures at Indiana, Texas Tech, and Alabama.

His track record speaks volumes: from leading Arizona State to an FBS-leading 9.0 tackles for loss per game in 2012 to helping Pittsburgh rank third nationally in sacks per game in 2011.

Randolph's defensive units are known for their aggressive play and relentless pursuit, qualities that have earned his players numerous accolades and set new benchmarks in defensive performance. As Cowboy football gears up for a new season, the addition of Randolph promises to fortify their defensive front, drawing on his storied career and deep-rooted passion for the game.

As we continue our Top 25 countdown, we focus on defensive line play for #21 Oklahoma State. Let’s start with the Cowboy’s outlook for the season.

Season Preview Capsule

Oklahoma State might be the best team in the new Big 12. They've had 18 straight winning seasons and are loaded with experience. The offense is explosive, led by star running back Ollie Gordon and a strong receiving corps. The defense has some weaknesses but makes big plays and relies on a fantastic linebacker group. The key to their success is keeping the running game going.

Oklahoma State Strengths

Offense:

  • Strong offensive line: Top in pass protection, best in Big 12 for tackles for loss allowed
  • Star running back: Ollie Gordon (2023 Doak Walker winner)
  • Talented receiving corps: Brennan Presley (101 catches in 2023), Rashod Owens, De'Zhaun Stribling, Tyler Foster (transfer)

Defense:

  • Fantastic linebackers: Nick Martin, Collin Oliver, Justin Wright
  • Strong pass rush: Obi Ezeigbo, veterans Collin Clay & Kody Walterscheid
  • Returning playmakers in the secondary: Kendal Daniels, Trey Rucker, Cam Smith, Korie Black

The Cowboys need to see the rushing attack be the emphasis of their season on both sides of the ball. Top pass rushers are there but, we need to see those individuals develop within the run game and become more stout in that department. The 3 High scheme will handle the passing situations. Exploring defensive line play and its potential impact on the Cowboys this fall, the focus is on building a strong foundation. Teaching the first steps and developing a solid base is crucial, whether defending against a run or pass. The initial steps and reading the offensive line's movement are essential for success. This clip demonstrates how to progress through the fundamental teachings.

Once the steps are perfected, the focus shifts to movement, including pass and run stunts. Athletes need to understand how to position themselves advantageously against the opposing offensive line's weaknesses. Emphasizing that everything starts with the legs and the athlete's base is crucial for the success of the defensive line.

Once the base is perfected, various upper body movements can be utilized. Though position-specific, practicing a variety of these movements is beneficial. Many athletes overuse a single move, but developing a diverse set of responses to different offensive line sets is advantageous for both the defense and the individual lineman.
