Coach ,

Craig Stutzmann, Passing Game Coordinator at Washington State has risen through the ranks as a young coach moving from the high school level to the small college level to the passing game coordinator at a Power 5 school.

In his clinic, he shared how he thinks about the passing game in developing different layers of every concept in order to create complementary pieces in the passing game.

He uses a run-and-shoot mentality that incorporates the RPO game. He relates it to a Bruce Lee quote:

In this video he explains exactly what that means to the Cougar offense (click image for video):

After building the set of complementary plays, the Cougars can utilize their passing game concepts within the RPO game. He explains how he utilizes the vertical attack to build the foundation of how they will vertically attack a defense.

The set up of their system is explained in this video:

Stutzmann takes a simple philosophy that creates a complex attack for the defense to defend by building one thing off of another.

Finally, understanding how his personnel:

KYP - know your personnel. Through repetition in the off-season, Coach Stutzmann wants to get the answers to “Which guy can win which routes vs. what type of leverage?”

At this time in the off-season evaluating your passing game to better understand how all of it fits together to attack a defense and then layering in your personnel’s skill sets can pay huge dividends in the fall.

It’s like the Bruce Lee quote...your offense becomes like water and takes the form it needs to defeat your opponent.

Always be growing!
