Season Preview Capsule:
Texas Tech approaches season #2 under Joey McGuire's leadership and is looking to continue the upward trend. The Red Raiders received a lot of favor from the Big 12 regarding scheduling, having avoided both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. They approach the season with a ton of young promise and are looking to begin the season with an early bang when they face Oregon at home in Lubbock on September 9th. Look for Tyree Wilson to make a splash and be the driving force for this team.
In this Featured clinic from Texas HS Coaches Association Coaching School, Head Coach Joey McGuire and Associate Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator Kenny Perry walk us through how they create a special force in their special team's units.
Here’s a preview of Kenny Perry’s talk on special teams:

Changing a Program Through Special Teams:
The presence of your upper coaching staff has repeatedly proven invaluable. Think of names like Bill Belichick who speaks often about how he manipulates his roster because of special teams.
Or other coaches who got a start in special teams and understood the impact such as Bill Cowher, John Harbaugh and Mike Ditka. Work top down, display your enthusiasm, and see the dividends that it pays with scoring percentages increasing for your offense based on yardage, stops accumulating for your defense and turnover creation. Take charge, take it over and take the hidden yardage!
Drills:
When we talk about drills and incorporating the all encompassing usage of the team we want this to be an item where it is valued but the drills also present value to the rest of the game.
When utilizing these drills use them as an opportunity to press the culture of your team whatever you plan to highlight that year. Isolate the time, preach the importance and push the energy in these periods. Use everyone from your best player to your QB’s and offensive line.
While they may not be a mainstay on the team they possess a piece of the culture and require a level of buy in themselves. Everyone is involved and developing.
Special Teams Path to Greatness:
The bottom line for special teams is that these are all opportunities to alter the game. There are more ways to score on teams than on offense and defense combined.
Create the largest advantage you can with your coordination and operation. But also develop experience, alter field position, and build upon technique and fundamentals through the time you have with special teams to grow your offense and defense.
