We appreciate the support coaches have given Lauren's First and Goal Foundation. Here's a part of a great presentation from Jeff Gallo given at this year's clinic.

Inside Monmouth’s Offensive Machine: Jeff Gallo’s Formula for Explosive Success

At Monmouth University, offensive coordinator Jeff Gallo is crafting one of the most productive and consistent offenses in all of FCS football. With over 20 years of experience at Monmouth—first as a player, now as a coach—Gallo has overseen an offensive evolution grounded in elite performance, relentless effort, and a clear cultural identity.

A Culture Built on Standards

Gallo’s system doesn’t just start on the field—it starts in the meeting room. There, Monmouth’s offense is introduced to what Gallo calls the “standard championship level performance.” Whether you’re a starting quarterback or a backup lineman, you’re expected to meet a high bar of preparation and performance.

That culture is reinforced through every detail—goal charts, film sessions, and what Gallo refers to as “Hawk Slides”—a nod to Monmouth’s mascot that sets the tone for what it means to be part of the program’s offense.

The HAWK Grading System

In 2016, Gallo and his staff introduced a revolutionary grading system to quantify player performance. Each play is graded on a 0–4 scale based on four key attributes:

  • H – Hustle: Are you playing hard?
  • A – Assignment: Are you accountable to your role?
  • W – Win: Did you beat your assignment?
  • K – Kill: Did you dominate or make a game-changing play?

A “Kill” might be a guard pancaking a defensive lineman or a receiver turning a jet sweep into a touchdown. It’s rare—but it’s the goal.

This standardized system allows coaches to analyze each play not just individually but as a unit. If the total score of all 11 players is under 30, it’s a “red” play—likely unsuccessful. A score of 33 or above is in the “blue” zone—where explosive plays happen.

Dominance by the Numbers

The results speak for themselves. Monmouth has led the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in total offense and scoring offense over the past three years.

In 2024, they were the top offense in the entire FCS. Gallo’s players have earned national recognition: three consecutive CAA Offensive Player of the Year awards, a nation-leading passer, rusher, and receiver.

This success stems from more than talent—it’s the direct outcome of an intentional culture built on clarity, accountability, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

Effort on Tape, Excellence on the Field

For Gallo, film doesn’t lie. Effort is emphasized as much as execution. Whether it's through situational drills, ball security routines, or short-yardage toughness circuits, everything in practice ties back to reinforcing the standards.

“Effort is a huge thing for us,” Gallo emphasizes. “We want to put effort on tape every single day. If it’s not on tape, it’s not part of who we are.”

Conclusion

Monmouth’s offensive success is no accident—it’s the result of years of investment into a coaching culture that prizes effort, precision, and dominance. With a proven grading system and a staff fully aligned under Gallo’s vision, the Hawks are poised to remain one of the most dangerous offensive units in college football.

“We want winners on the field. If we’re constantly grading out a two, that means we’re not winning enough. That tells us something—about the players, the techniques, or the plan.” — Jeff Gallo
