Helping the Quarterback Win: Joe Gerbino’s Blueprint for QB-Centric Offense

Joe Gerbino doesn’t just coach quarterbacks—he builds offenses around them. As the pass game coordinator and receivers coach at Colgate, Coach Gerbino brings a clear-eyed philosophy: take the burden off your quarterback’s shoulders and put him in a position to succeed—mentally and physically—on every snap.
“We want to control his first hit in the game, calm the nerves down,” Gerbino said. “And then create easy throws. That might be different for different guys, but we define it clearly.”
In his system, an “easy throw” isn’t just a check-down or a bubble. It’s a calculated decision that includes route placement, defender reads, and tempo. Gerbino layers his approach through:
- First-level throws like hitches, slants, and OTBs
- Pre-snap yes/no reads paired with Mike reads
- Intentional protection variation (5-, 6-, and 7-man)
- Designed pocket movement and screen plays
- Mental resets built into the script
These aren't theoretical concepts. Coach Gerbino showed how a struggling quarterback climbed to a 60+% completion rate and a 3:1 TD-to-INT ratio under this approach.
He explains the philosophy behind the Q-Draw Shock concept in practical terms:
“If the Mike exits the box, we’re going to tuck and run. If the hitch is there, he has to love it. That has to be a guaranteed completion.”
The focus never strays from the quarterback. Coach Gerbino insists on reducing mental fatigue by eliminating ambiguous decisions and building confidence through success.
“Helping our quarterback out, guaranteeing easy completions—or at least trying to—picking on a defender in the concept or the scheme,” he said. “That’s how we win.”
Always be growing!
