Attack Smarter: Andy Merfeld’s Modular Pressure System for Edge Blitzes

Coach ,

Coach Andy Merfeld’s Modular Pressure System introduces a smarter, more adaptable way to bring edge pressure—without sacrificing structure or tipping your hand. Designed to create disruption without complexity, Merfeld’s system aligns edge blitzing with modern offensive challenges.

Merfeld, who has coached at both the small-college and high school levels, specializes in coverage, defensive back play, and special teams. His presentations are known for their sharp focus, zeroing in on practical, implementable strategies.

The Modular Pressure System is no different.

“We’re talking about a way to easily adjust your blitzes based on the formation,” says Merfeld. “The edge blitzer can and will change, but the coverage and interior rushers stay the same.”

Why Modular?

Traditional blitz packages often fall short against today’s more varied offenses. Tight formations, empty looks, and 3x1 sets make it harder to get your edge rusher to the quarterback cleanly. Merfeld’s system solves this problem by shifting who blitzes—while maintaining the same coverage shell and interior structure.

This does two critical things:

  • Disguises Pressure: “You want the quarterback and O-line to have to identify the pressure post-snap,” Merfeld says. Holding your base look longer forces mistakes.

  • Improves Efficiency: “It gets the blitzer closer to his gap—closer to the point of attack.”

The result is a pressure package that works against any formation. No more checking out of a call because the offensive flank doesn’t match your plan. The defense adapts instantly—without overhauling the play.

Who Blitzes, When?

Merfeld teaches a clear decision framework:

  • To the passing strength, the default edge blitzer is the star (nickel). If No. 3 is detached to his side, adjustments are made.

  • Away from the passing strength, the free safety becomes the blitzer—unless No. 2 is detached or No. 1 is tight.

While rooted in a 4-2-5 system, Merfeld’s rules translate across defensive structures. He emphasizes clear decision-making over broad improvisation.

“You can think of the rules like best available based on flank,” he explains, “but we don’t teach it that way. We have specific, built-in defaults.”

The Gain

The Modular Pressure System equips you with a flexible blueprint that simplifies in-game adjustments. Your defense plays fast. Your edge pressures stay live against any look. And your coverage shell remains intact.

This isn’t just about pressure—it’s about structure. Merfeld’s method empowers your defense to be aggressive without being exposed.

If you coach defense, especially in a 4-2-5 or nickel-heavy structure, this presentation gives you everything you need to implement edge pressure with confidence—backed by a process that adapts as fast as the game.

Here is Coach Merfeld’s thoughts on a modular system…
