Coach ,

Simple wins!

Kevin Kelley has proved it time and time again. In 18 years as head coach at Pulaski Academy, he has a total record of 216-29-1. Before becoming head coach at Pulaski Academy HS, the team had never been past the semifinals and had only been there twice. Since then, the school has been to 15 semifinals, 12 championship games, and won 9 state championships.

He has been named USA Today National Coach of the Year, coached in the Under Armour All America Game, appeared in multiple television stories including HBO Real Sports, and a “30 for 30” Short

Known as “the high school that doesn’t punt” or “the high school that onsides kicks all of the time,” Pulaski Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas is pretty good on offense and defense as well. They won their 9th state championship in 2020, and head coach Kevin Kelley shares another component that allows them to overwhelm and outscore defenses, their sprint out game.

Coach Kelley starts by pointing out a flaw in the thought process that many mention as why to not sprint out...that it “takes away half of the field.” His answer is simple. You aren't taking away half of the field because they have to cover the other half of the field.

So with that settled, he continues his clinic showing how effective the sprintout can be and some compliments off of it like an RPO, a throwback screen and some tricks.

This is a concept that they run out of 3x1, 2x2, 3x2 and 4x1. For Kelley it starts with something simple like a one on one to the single wr side.  The safety is slid over and not in a great position to help. The WR will run and out-and-up but come back if he doesn’t beat the corner as illustrated below.

In this example, Coach Kelley moves the running back into empty to put him in a position to help on the edge.  The same out-and-up with comeback rule is run.

Here is a simple variation using a play action fake.

The next example shows a stacked formation which induces the defense to play one high leaving a void on the two receiver side. The out-and-up is used to occupy the corner and the corner route is thrown quickly as the #2 receiver clears level 2 and gets into the void.

He illustrates the multiplicity of the concept and when run against looks which he shows is unstoppable when executed properly, Coach Kelley breaks down all of these examples in this video (click on image):

This is more than just a single play. It becomes more effective as he builds it into a package that includes route variations and screens. It’s also very effective in the red zone and on the goal line.
