Oregon Ducks Analyst on the Self-Scout and Actionable Information

Coach -
Dante Bartee, analyst at Oregon, is a great young football mind and a deep thinker on the game, and he’s coached at the high school level and all college levels.
His insight into the game is universal and what we share from him today on self-scout is straightforward and very useful. Listen to his thoughts on self-scout here.
Regardless of where you are in the season (including done), this is a useful approach.
Dante Bartee’s Four-Step Approach to Self-Scout
#1) Evaluate Frequency vs. Efficiency
Volume alone doesn’t define value. Look at how often a call has been used and measure it against its actual effectiveness. If something is heavily practiced but rarely called—or frequently called but not performing—you gain important insight into where adjustments are needed.
#2) Tie Calls to Their Intended Situation
Not every call is designed for every opponent. Package-specific or situation-specific calls shouldn’t be judged the same way as base concepts. Evaluate each play within the context it was created for so the data reflects real purpose.
#3) Simplify Rather Than Add
Self-scouting often tempts coaches to add more. Bartee stresses the opposite: streamline. Increase the usage of what your players execute best, and reduce or remove what isn’t showing up on game day. Simplicity creates confidence and speed.
#4) Change Presentation, Not the Entire Play
When variation is needed, look first at presentation—formations, motions, spacing, and shifts. Many concepts don’t need to change; they just need a different look to keep opponents off balance while maintaining clarity for your players.
This four-step process works whether you're preparing for the next opponent or building your off-season blueprint.
Coach Bartee’s approach is useful in all three phases of the game.
Good luck in your preparations this week!
