Coach -
With just 11 days until the 2025 C.O.O.L. Clinic, we’re highlighting one of the most valuable sessions ever delivered at the clinic—one that transcends scheme and applies to every coach who wants to lead a high-performing position room.
Legendary offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia—who spent 36 seasons in the NFL, including 19 under Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots—shared timeless insights on how to run the most effective meeting room in football. Whether you're coaching on Fridays or Sundays, this session will challenge how you teach and connect.
“What you get out of your position meetings is directly proportional to what you put into them.”
— Dante Scarnecchia
Developing the mindset and skill set necessary to succeed on the field begins in the meeting room. That was the message from legendary New England Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia, who spent 34 seasons coaching in the NFL—19 of those under Bill Belichick. At the 2021 C.O.O.L. Clinic, he shared timeless lessons that apply to coaching any position group.
1. Your Meeting Room Setup Matters More Than You Think
Late in his career, Scarnecchia experienced a shift that transformed how he taught. After returning from retirement, he re-entered a meeting room where the players looked past him toward the screen behind. But this time, he taught from the front, where he could see their eyes—and their reactions.
“I always had their attention. They couldn’t sleep, and I could read their faces.”
He keyed in on validators—those players locked in, nodding when they understood. And he watched for the look—confusion that signaled he hadn’t been clear. This real-time feedback loop elevated his ability to teach and adjust on the fly.
2. Use Video to Keep It Personal and Relevant
Scarnecchia emphasized using practice and game cut-ups—especially when they feature the players in the room.
“If they’re in those tapes, they’ll be alert and tuned in. If they’re not, their minds wander.”
Meeting time shouldn’t just be lecture. He constantly asked questions, engaged players by name, and created space for honest conversation. When players feel like active participants, they stay engaged.
3. Create a Culture of Questions
From his days in the Marine Corps, Scarnecchia brought a principle into the meeting room:
“The dumbest question is the one not asked.”
To make that stick, he never mocked or dismissed questions. He created a culture where questions were not only welcomed—but celebrated. Why? Because one player asking usually means five others are wondering the same thing.
4. Test More. And Let Them Collaborate.
Scarnecchia routinely gave written tests—especially in spring and camp. But he didn’t stop there. He encouraged collaboration.
“What better way to get guys communicating about how to get things done?”
Tests weren’t about grading—they were about reinforcing communication, building trust, and locking in the call system and assignments across the board.
5. Stick to a Time Limit—and Break It Up
He capped meeting blocks at 40 minutes, then gave a hard five-minute break. Sometimes, he took the team straight to the weight room for a walk-through if the concept required it. He understood different players learn in different ways—and adapted his methods to meet them.
6. Use Meetings to Set the Practice Plan
Every day, Scarnecchia reviewed:
- What drills would be done in individuals
- What techniques would be emphasized
- Who would rotate in each rep group
- How depth charts and reps would align with the week’s plan
This daily structure made practice more efficient—and gave players clarity about what was expected.
Final Takeaway
No matter what position you coach, your meeting room is your classroom. Scarnecchia’s approach reminds us that intentional design, meaningful engagement, and consistent structure can elevate performance and accountability.
Start by asking yourself:
Can I see their eyes? Are they nodding or confused? Are they part of the conversation—or just watching it?
Make your meetings matter—and your players will reflect it on the field.
