Head Coach Chris Keevers has U Indy performing solidly on both sides of the ball.   The defense is ranked #9 in the country where it matters most, allowing only 14 points per game.  Defensive Coordinator Brad Dougherty’s bend but don’t break defense is #6 in Red Zone Defense at .572.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Greyhounds are moving the ball well (#15 Total Offense 448.0 yards per game) and  putting up points (#20 Scoring Offense 37.5 points per game). Offensive Coordinator Brad Wilson relies on a balanced attack (216 rush/232 pass ypg) with QB Gavin Suckup and RB Jon Lewis leading the way.

QB Gavin Sukup

95 of 145 for 1342 yd / 15 TD / 3 INT

#19 Completion 65.5%

#6 Passing Efficiency 172.91

#20 Points Responsible For 114

RB Jon Lewis

94 for 540 yd/ 5.7 avg. / 6TD/ 90 ypg

Coach Wilson spoke at the Indiana Football Coaches Association Clinic and also put together a series of videos on the Greyhound offense.  Let’s take a look at the Greyhound attack.

One-Back and Two-Back Power

Coach Wilson leans on the Power Run Game.  Power is illustrated in this video; he shares the single back base to the tight end and to the open side and two back power.  While inside zone is their #1 run scheme.  Their gap schemes were highly efficient averaging 7.9 yards per carry.

Inside Zone

The zone running game is the starting point for the attack. Inside zone provides the Greyhounds with a run that has answers like in this example he where he explains how they use the run vs. field zone blitz teams and nose twist stunts.

Play Action

When you run the ball well downhill, then play action works effectively to create a balanced offense.  In the example, Coach Wilson explains their “City” concept which works off of their gap scheme runs.  He shows a power read action with 3 receivers going vertical using their “Viking” or 4 verticals concept.

This package of downhill runs forms the basis of the offense which then allows for play action and RPO to be a big part of the passing attack to provide balance.

Best of luck to everyone this weekend!

Always be growing!
