Coach -

Dan Lanning, the Head Coach of the Oregon Ducks, has a distinct and methodical approach to coaching blitzers, blending fundamental defensive end techniques with specific situational adjustments.

His philosophy emphasizes versatility and adaptability, ensuring every player on the defense understands how to fulfill the role of a defensive end when required. Here, we break down Lanning's methods, focusing on his concepts of high-gear and low-gear techniques.

High Gear vs. Low Gear

This video gives the overview of Coach Lanning explaining the method for teaching Blitzers:

High Gear Technique

Lanning's system uses a high-gear technique primarily to set a hard edge. This technique is particularly effective when the Blitzer is away from the running back. The high-gear player aims to bend down the line aggressively, exploiting the fact that they are often unaccounted for by the offense, which can lead to tackles for loss (TFLs). This method creates disruption and capitalizes on opportunities where the offensive tackle does not engage directly.

Low Gear Technique

Conversely, the low gear technique is employed when the Blitzer is on the side of the running back. Here, the objective concerns control and containment rather than outright aggression. The low-gear player is responsible for closing the hip of the tackle to eliminate rushing lanes, particularly the outside zone. They must be ready to react and playback down the line if the quarterback keeps the ball or if there is outside action. This technique is also called the "surf technique" in Lanning's terminology.

Application of Techniques

Lanning's approach integrates these techniques into a cohesive strategy that ensures all defensive players are prepared to act as defensive ends. The methods are not limited to blitzers alone but are applied to four-down front setups. This dual application highlights the versatility required from his players.

Coaching Philosophy

Versatility: Every player must be capable of functioning as a defensive end and understand both high- and low-gear responsibilities.

Situational Awareness: Players must recognize their position relative to the running back and adjust their techniques accordingly.

Fundamental Execution: Emphasis on eliminating rushing lanes and setting hard edges to control the offensive play.

Practical Drill Examples

Surf Technique Drill: Players practice closing the hip of the tackle, maintaining readiness to shift back down the line for quarterback or outside actions.

High Gear Bend Drill: Blitzers work on bending down the line away from the back, focusing on creating TFL opportunities.

Example: a Sim to Stop “5 in the Closet”

Coach Lanning shared his thought process used while he was the defensive coordinator at Georgia in the National Championship against Alabama.  He showed what they saw on film, and then the plan to cover everything up on the backend, especially the two routes Alabama wanted most, the OTB and the Wheel, and how they defeat the protection with a Sim.

This is an example of how to apply all the knowledge you have gained to defeat something specific. (click on image for video):

Dan Lanning's coaching style for blitzers is a blend of aggressive playmaking and disciplined control. By teaching his players to differentiate between high-gear and low-gear techniques, he ensures they are adaptable and practical in various game situations. This comprehensive approach enhances individual player performance and strengthens the overall defensive unit, making it a formidable component of Oregon's strategy.
