As we kick off our 2025 FBS Top 25 Countdown, we’re starting with the USC Trojans — and giving you a free clinic video that takes you inside Lincoln Riley’s weekly game prep.

Rather than summarize the clinic, we pulled out key takeaways that can immediately improve how you prep with your staff:

🧠 Weekly Prep Tips from Lincoln Riley

1. Start with Independent Film Study

Instead of launching into group film sessions on Sunday, Riley has his coaches watch tape alone. The goal? Fresh, independent insights before group discussion.

“We don’t operate like a think tank. Every coach brings something to the table through focused film study — that’s how innovation happens.”

2. Define Roles, But Keep Ideas Open

Each coach owns a piece of the game plan (e.g. red zone, pressures), but Riley expects ideas from everyone, on everything. That means tight ends coaches can offer 3rd down concepts, and they should.

3. Avoid the "Yes-Man" Room

The culture is built on challenging ideas, not nodding along. That open feedback is how the best ideas surface — and how the staff gets aligned.

4. Own the Scout Team Details

Preparation teams are a coaching priority, not just a developmental task. Riley leans on GAs and QCs to deliver sharp, realistic looks every day.
