Each Sunday I’ll share quick insights from respected voices in the game—ideas that might help you find one more edge as you prepare for the week ahead. Think of it as a weekly scouting report from coaches to coaches.

On Offense – Jason Bachtel, Head Coach, Houston Christian

  • Build an opponent profile that covers depth chart, defensive scheme, coordinator background, and how their base looks aligns with your top formations.
  • Chart favorite stunts, blitzes, and coverages—percentages quickly reveal the core of how they’ll attack.
  • Dig into coaching history. Past systems often explain wrinkles that may not appear on the current season’s tape.

“By the time we sit down on Sunday night, we already have a scouting report ready to go. We don’t start from scratch—we start with information.”

On Defense – Jeff Long, Head Coach, Moravian

  • The last three or four games give the clearest read on who your opponent is right now.
  • Down-and-distance splits by personnel can uncover hidden run/pass leanings.
  • Formation details—tailback depth, tight end location, receiver alignment, motion—often reveal tendencies that shape the call sheet.

“The question is always, who are they now? That’s the team you’re preparing for—not the one from last season.”

On Special Teams – Tommy Perry, Coordinator, Colorado State

  • Identify the coordinator’s style: a single voice usually creates patterns; split duties can leave blind spots.
  • Find their top special teams player—the coverage ace or return threat—and design ways to neutralize him.
  • Track your opponent’s specialists. The punter’s top five kicks, return alignments, and preferred rush schemes all shape how you prepare.

“Whatever they do best, take it away. Make them play left-handed, and you’ve already forced them out of their comfort zone.”

Closing Note

Three coaches, three approaches. Each offers a different lens on how to gather information and turn it into an edge. Take the pieces that fit your situation and fold them into your own weekly prep.
