Paul Kilby's Slot-T: Block a Few-Trick a Few-Make a Few Miss

Coach ,

For those watching the NFL Draft - it's great to finally see the Wing-T being validated for its ability to develop a #1 pick at the Quarterback position... (Cam Ward) was a Wing-T quarterback in high school who was a zero-star recruit. He went to Incarnate Word for two years, lifting the program with himself after beating out a freshman All-American for the starting quarterback job (nfl.com)...

On to today's topic: the Slot-T.

Paul Kilby has built a powerhouse at Liberty Hill High School in Texas—twice crowned state champions (2006, 2007) and state runner-ups in 2018 and 2021. At the heart of that success is the Slot-T offense, a system Kilby and his staff have mastered to a level that merges old-school discipline with surgical execution.

The Foundation: Block a Few. Trick a Few. Make a Few Miss.

Kilby’s Slot-T blueprint is clear: it’s not about outmuscling opponents—it's about outmaneuvering them. Liberty Hill doesn’t use zone concepts. In fact, “zone” is considered a four-letter word around their facility. Everything begins with man-blocking: trap, power, sweep, bootleg, and play-action.

At the core is a philosophy passed down by one of the system’s originators, Coach Bush: “Block a few, trick a few, make a few miss.” That simplicity hides a lethal complexity.

  • Block a few: Liberty Hill rarely boasts overpowering linemen. Instead, they thrive with technique and angles. Guards at 190-200 pounds, ends who are essentially extra linemen—Kilby’s players learn to strike quickly and stay on their paths.
  • Trick a few: Backfield deception is nonstop. Jet motion, quickside misdirection, and clever influence on linebackers create hesitation—just enough to open a seam.
  • Make a few miss: Running backs are trained to be robots—until two to three yards past the line. Only then can they get creative. Before that, it’s about trust in timing and path.

Why It Works: Speed Kills… Slowly

Kilby emphasized that Liberty Hill practices without a football in the backfield for the first few days of install. That’s how important speed and precision are. “We want our backs trying to beat the handoff,” he said. That mindset starts young and is drilled into every rep. By the time full-speed reps begin, the timing is already there.

Fullbacks align at 4 yards, not the traditional 5 or 6. This allows for quicker traps and keeps defensive linemen from resetting. Every step, every angle, every read is practiced to the point of instinct.

Slot-T vs. Wing-T: The Differences That Matter

Kilby acknowledges the strong heritage and overlap with the Wing-T—both offenses love trap, power, and buck sweep. But Slot-T adds its own wrinkles:

  • Symmetry: Liberty Hill runs everything to both sides with equal force. Trap, sweep, boot—no side is favored.
  • Tempo of Trap: The Slot-T hits faster. The fullback's alignment and the tighter angles create quicker access to the line of scrimmage.
  • Guard Play: Unlike the bubbling guards often seen in Wing-T, Slot-T guards at Liberty Hill “hug butts.” They stay flat, tight, and downhill—no wasted movement, no wasted time.
  • No Hitting in Practice: Instead of full-contact team periods, Liberty Hill uses bags and sleds. Kilby believes the cost of banging bodies day after day drains players. The tradeoff? Fresh legs and full buy-in by midseason.

Coaching Takeaway: Scheme + Discipline = Big Wins

What’s most striking isn’t just the X’s and O’s—it’s the clarity of purpose behind them. Everything in Kilby’s system reinforces the same themes: speed, precision, angles, and trust. Whether it’s a guard aiming for a trap, a back flying up behind the tackle, or a snap count synced with a motion package, every piece works in harmony.

“We’re not trying to smash into something 140 times in practice,” Kilby said. “We trust the process.”

And that process has taken Liberty Hill to the top of Texas football more than once.
