The option offense may be the easiest offense to run play action. If you look across college football, year-to-year the leader in yards per completion is an option team.
Why is that? Because you cannot play soft defense against an option offense. Therefore, play action can be deadly, especially if you hone in on which defender is playing most aggressive against your run.
Today we share three concepts that attack the aggressive defenders.
#1) Vs. Aggressive Corners
Buzz Preston is a long time option coach having served at Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, and Stanford. In this video he shares how to attack the aggressive corner with a simple play action.
#2) Post Wheel - Safeties who React to Arc
Many concepts call for an arcing slot or tight end to the safety. This opens up some great opportunities in utilizing the Post-Wheel. Texas HS Coach Kelly Lee shares how they use post wheel off of the quick pitch toss action, but it really can be effective off of any play utilizing an arc block.

#3) Double Vertical
Drew Thatcher is the OC/QB Coach for UNK Loper. In this video he shows how their double vertical concept attacks the voids left by aggressive run fitters. He first shows the defense stopping the run for a one yard gain, then how the double vertical exploits that aggressiveness.
A well executed run game opens up huge opportunity to take a big chunk out of the defense. The key is knowing exactly who to attack and having those tools in your offense to create these explosives off of play action. The result is they will be forced to play cautious enough that you can get back to grinding them down with the run.
Always be growing!
