Learn How Our High School Team of the Week Excels with the Passing Game
Oct 12, 2023 12:11 pm
Coach ,
Our team of the week is Fayetteville HS (Arkansas) who has moved to 6-0 on the season and heads into a showdown with their rival Bentonville.
Head Coach Casey Dick has an arsenal of offensive weapons as the Bulldogs are excelling on offense, outscoring their opponents 304-135. That’s average of 50.7 points per game on offense.
Coach Dick played quarterback for Arkansas from 2006-2008 and was a team captain his senior season. Under his leadership, the Bulldogs are 23-8 over the last two seasons and in to 2023.
The offense is orchestrated by Offensive Coordinator Jay Wilkinson. Here’s what his top skill players are doing so far this season.
QB Drake Lindsey: 127-195 (65.1%). 2010 Yards, 27 TD/1 INT
WR Jason DeLamar: 40 Receptions, 712 Yards, 10 TDs
WR Mason Spencer: 31 Receptions, 643 Yards, 6 TDs
WR Charlie Graves: 27 Receptions, 324 Yards, 7 TDs
The passing game has been excellent and it’s something that Coach Wilkinson is known for. He spoke at the Southern California Football Coaches Association Clinic on several of his pass concepts.
Understanding Coverage Families
The passing attack begins with a simple understanding shared with the players on the coverage families. He explains it here:
Common Language
From there, they want their receivers to understand how they approach the layout of the field and the landmarks which will affect the alignments and the way the run their routes. The landmarks help to build a common language and a defined way to communicate what they are doing in their uptempo offense. He explains the definitions here:
Double - A Multiple Answer Route
Double is a concept that can attack multiple coverages with a simple tag. He talked about in in detail here. Coach Wilkinson shares the diagram and assignments of the concept here:
A main feature is its ability to attack the middle of the field with the Middle Read. He covers that on game film in this next video.
If you haven’t seen Coach Wilkinson clinic on the passing game, it’s something you should put on your to do list for this off season. He puts great detail in it.
Speaking of clinics, if you have something you’re doing very well and would like to share during clinic season, please respond to this email. We are starting to fill out our clinic schedule for the upcoming off season.
Good luck to Coach Dick, Coach Wilkinson and the Bulldogs this weekend, as well as to you and your team!
Always be growing!
