The Sunday Scouting Report – Execution Through Discipline

Discipline defines winning football. It shows up in how you script plays, how you structure your defense, and how you prepare your special teams. This week’s insights come from three coaches who ground their game planning in structure and detail: Kyle Ohradzansky, OC, University of Findlay (Offense), Ilaisa Tuiaki, DL Coach, Oregon State (Defense), and Dan Beard, STC/LB Coach, Gettysburg College (Special Teams).

Offense: Stick to Your Identity

Kyle Ohradzansky emphasizes that great offenses don’t chase complexity — they execute their identity. He teaches his quarterbacks and staff to lean on core plays when pressure rises.

“When in doubt, don’t reach for the exotic call. Stay with what you know, and let your players play fast.”

Tips from Coach Ohradzansky:

  • Build your game plan around core plays your team can execute with confidence.
  • Use simple, base calls on early downs to stay on schedule.
  • Avoid cluttering the call sheet with plays that don’t match your identity.
  • Teach quarterbacks to trust rhythm and tempo rather than chasing big plays.

Defense: Adapt to Personnel and Situations

Ilaisa Tuiaki builds his defensive approach around matchups and game context. He explains that a defense must be flexible enough to fit its people while being detailed in situational planning.

“You can’t just draw up scheme in a vacuum. It has to match your personnel and the situations you’ll face on Saturday.”

Tips from Coach Tuiaki:

  • Match defensive schemes to the strengths of your personnel.
  • Break down run fits and coverage responsibilities by situation.
  • Adjust fronts and stunts based on opponent tendencies.
  • Keep your weekly plan clear so players know how to react, not just where to line up.

Special Teams: Drill the Hidden Yards

Dan Beard stresses that special teams are won by drilling the situations other teams overlook. Punt placement, coverage discipline, and reaction to chaos create the edge.

“If you don’t practice it, don’t expect your players to execute it when it matters most.”

Tips from Coach Beard:

  • Rep every punting situation — backed up, directional, and sky punts.
  • Teach returners to master fair-catch rules and field awareness.
  • Prepare the team for blocked-kick scenarios and how to react.
  • Emphasize field position as a game-changer through hidden yardage.

The Final Word: Why Details Decide Games

From Ohradzansky’s offensive identity, to Tuiaki’s situational defense, to Beard’s special teams preparation, the lesson is consistent: discipline creates execution, and execution wins games. The margin for error on Saturdays is thin — structure, detail, and confidence built in practice make the difference when the game is on the line.

Good luck in your preparations this week!
