Davidson College’s football program has turned to Saj Thakkar to continue its tradition of success following Scott Abell’s departure to Rice University. A seasoned offensive mind and proven leader, Thakkar brings a wealth of knowledge to the Wildcats, honed over a decade of coaching at the collegiate level. From his time at Harvard to his successful tenure as head coach at Bentley University, Thakkar has developed a reputation as one of the sharpest offensive innovators in the game.

Now, as the head coach of an FCS program with a rich winning tradition, Thakkar is poised to lead Davidson into a new era, focusing not just on schemes, but on players and their development.

An Offensive Innovator

Saj Thakkar has been a featured speaker at clinics hosted by CoachesClinic, where he shared his insights into offensive strategy. His presentations showcased not only his deep understanding of the game but also his ability to communicate and teach effectively:

The Art of Jet Motion: In his first clinic, Thakkar focused on the strategic use of Jet Motion to stretch defenses, disrupt reads, and create mismatches for playmakers. He emphasized how motion could transform even simple concepts into explosive plays by manipulating defenders and opening up space.

These clinics highlighted Thakkar’s ability to innovate within a foundational framework, blending creativity with sound football principles. His teachings resonated with coaches at all levels, further solidifying his reputation as a thought leader in offensive strategy.

Offensive Philosophy: Players First, Innovation Always

Thakkar’s offensive philosophy can be summed up in one guiding principle: Players > Plays. Rather than rigidly adhering to a predetermined scheme, Thakkar builds his offense around the strengths and skills of his roster, tailoring his system to fit his personnel. This approach fosters buy-in from players and ensures that everyone has a role in the team’s success.

Key elements of Thakkar’s philosophy include:

  • Jet Motion: A cornerstone of his strategy, Jet Motion manipulates defenders, creates mismatches, and stretches the field.
  • Counter Run Game: A physical, downhill scheme that incorporates versatile pulling combinations and modern RPO elements to put defenders in conflict.
  • Play-Action and Screens: Complementary plays that keep defenses guessing and exploit overcommitments.
  • Adaptability: Multi-personnel groupings and multiple alignments provide flexibility to attack defenses in a variety of ways.
  • Attack with Tempo: A no-huddle offense keeps the pressure on defenses, limiting substitutions and maximizing offensive rhythm.
  • Ball Security as a Priority: His mantra, “The Ball is the Program,” underscores the importance of decision-making and protecting possessions.

From Teacher to Leader

Thakkar’s coaching career has been marked by consistent success and development. After five years on the Harvard coaching staff, he transitioned to head coach at Bentley University, where he compiled an impressive 14-6 record over two seasons, including an 8-2 campaign in 2024. His ability to combine creativity with discipline made Bentley one of the top programs in Division II.

His experience as both an offensive coordinator and a head coach has prepared him for this moment—leading a successful FCS program like Davidson. With a proven track record of adapting to talent and creating dynamic offenses, Thakkar has earned the opportunity to guide the Wildcats forward.

Congratulations to Coach Thakkar and best of luck at Davidson!
