Two 🔑s to a Better Uptempo Offense: Fast and Quick
May 18, 2023 4:35 pm
Coach ,
Is your uptempo offense really as fast as it can be?
The key to an explosive uptempo offense is to be moving the ball down the field. An offense that has to run back to the same line of scrimmage of the last play is not the most efficient.
There’s two keys that can help the uptempo offense by making it easier on the offensive line.
#1) Quick Passing Game
Attack with quick rhythm passes that have high completion % and move the ball incrementally down the field avoiding the need for your offensive players to back track to the same LOS
Super Bowl Champion Offensive Line Coach Andy Heck likes to teach linemen to be aggressive in how they attack defenders, especially in the quick game. He wants this linemen to “invad the space” of the defender. This serves in quickly engaging them, getting their hands down and allowing the QB to get that ball out on rhythm through clean windows.
In this video, Coach Heck shares how they teach the aggressive set.
Quick game has many advantages in attacking multiple coverages, and it allows a line to do its work while not having to hold up for long. This definitely is advantageous for the offensive line who will have their hands full with a very athletic defensive line in deeper drop pass concepts.
#2) Train OL to be Uptempo
Train every detail of how to get to the ball and get it back in play quickly. While this seems simple - get to the ball - Tennessee OL Coach Glen Elarbee and the Volunteer staff understand how putting attention to detail in their coaching enables them to be the fastest offense in college football.
Coach Elarbee has specific mechanics and coaching points for the offensive line when utilizing tempo. It helps the Volunteers save critical seconds off their operations when the objective is to go as fast as possible. He also explains that they will utilize scrimmage film to teach these aspects of tempo to their linemen:
That’s pretty simple - two keys to making your uptempo offense faster in operations lie in picking schemes that methodically move the ball forward as well as the mechanics of getting the ball snapped faster.
Coach Heck and Coach Elarbee are speakers at the World Famous C.O.O.L. Clinic which begins this afternoon at 4pm. Check out the line up and register here:
