Cody Kennedy Breaks Down GT Counter vs. Odd Fronts

Coach -
The GT Counter is a classic play, but when you run it vs. an odd front, you better have the details dialed in. Coach Cody Kennedy breaks it down with the coaching points that matter:
Key Call: “Odd” from the Center
- Triggers a tray block: TE + OT combo to the #2 backer
- RG delivers a down block on the nose
- Everyone eyes their priority gap to the left
“Let’s cover to stop penetration, and then vertical with our strong play side hand to maintain that leverage.” – Cody Kennedy
Pullers: Handle the Gray Area
- Guard: Open pull to kick the force player (usually the nickel)
- If no force player → climb to the next threat
- Backside Tackle: Skip pull with square shoulders
- Target: First backer in the box
Coaching Point:
When paired with a tight end against an odd front, assignment clarity and technique become non-negotiable. It’s not just a scheme—it’s a detailed operation that demands reps and refinement.
Why This Play Hits Hard
- Attacks structure of odd fronts without changing your base
- Forces defenders to declare = easier post-snap reads
- Sets the tone with physicality and precision
Coach It Up
- Rep the GT Counter vs. odd fronts in spring or install
- Stress puller technique: eyes up, path tight, shoulders square
- Add variety with TE alignments and motion to change the picture
