It’s “Back Together Weekend” in the NFL and the official start of the the 2024 football season across America.  

Many of us at the high school and college levels will be back together with our teams soon, and we always anticipate this with excitement.

As we embark on another exciting football season, we extend our best wishes to you and your teams. The start of training camp is always a special time, filled with anticipation, hard work, and the promise of a new season.

We’re sharing three key insights from the four World Champion Kansas City Chiefs’ staff members to inspire and guide you. 

These nuggets of wisdom taken from the C.O.O.L. Clinic come from Head Coach Andy Reid, Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, Defensive Line Coach Joe Cullen, and Offensive Line Coach Andy Heck.

1. Study and Attack Protections: Spagnuolo shared that the first thing he examines in an opponent is their pass protection schemes. Identifying weaknesses or patterns allows for strategic defensive planning.
2. Versatility in Defensive Plans: In today's game, offensive lines have numerous protection schemes. Spagnuolo emphasizes the need for defenses to be equally adaptable and prepared for various offensive strategies.
3. Balancing Tendencies and Flexibility: While studying tendencies is crucial, Spagnuolo cautions against overloading players with information. Providing key insights while allowing players to react instinctively ensures better performance on the field.

Insights from Defensive Line Coach Joe Cullen:

1. Fundamental Techniques: Cullen stresses the importance of mastering basic techniques, such as hand placement and footwork, to dominate at the line of scrimmage.
2. Relentless Effort: He encourages players to maintain relentless effort and intensity in every drill and play, as this sets the tone for the entire defense.
3. Adaptation to Opponents: Cullen highlights the need to study and adapt to the strengths and weaknesses of opposing offensive linemen, allowing for tailored and effective defensive strategies.

Insights from Offensive Line Coach Andy Heck:
