Coach ,
The USFL has some familiar coaches from the Clinic circuit over the past two offseasons.
Noel Mazzone is the offensive coordinator of the New Orleans Breakers, and they are leading the lead in passing (214.2 yards per game) and 3rd down conversions (43.7%). They are 2nd in total yards with 346 ypg.
If you listened to Coach Mazzone in clinics he constantly talks about the importance of working 3rd down, and it’s a big part of their planning and practice.
Coach Mazzone is running his typical offense using tempo, zone read, counter read (bash), key screens, and RPO.
The league may have changed, but Coach Mazzone has adapted and made his offense work. For him, he starts by thinking about who he wants to conflict. He explains 1st level, 2nd level, and 3rd level conflicts here:
Video: Who are we trying to conflict?
Here are examples of them making a 3rd level defender the conflict player and creating explosives play.
Eric Marty has been climbing the ranks as well. After serving a season at Grambling State as the offensive coordinator, he is now the OC for the Michigan Panthers. What he’s done there is found an almost perfect balance in their attack (157.7 yards passing and 156.5 yards rushing).
For Coach Marty execution is king and he knows he must put his players in the best position to be successful. He has a thought process and methodology he follows to do that. He gives an overview of the core tenets of his game plan here:
That information then is put together in Scouting Reports. Coach Marty believes in creating these templates before the season and giving players consistency week to week in the information they will get as well as what it looks like. He explains here:
It’s great to have football to watch in the spring as well as to have the ability to learn what those coaches like Noel Mazzone and Eric Marty are teaching.
Enjoy the games this weekend which will honor the US Military!
Always be growing!
