Coach -
In this week’s technique series, Coach Kaufmann puts the focus on the tight end position and specifically the skill of receiving.
Creating big physical hybrid athletes creates an advantage for an offense. Coach Kaufmann highlights the presentations of two coaches who have excelled at teaching the position.
Jeff Farris was UCLA’s TE Coach last season and is now the head coach at Austin Peay, and Mike Judge has been with the Miami Dolphins since 2019.
These are two presentations full of detail in coaching the TE position.

Multifaceted: Building a TE that can do both - Receiving Emphasis
Building a TE that is a hybrid weapon automatically adds a dynamic of danger to an offense. These guys are quite literally the epitome of a Swiss Army knife in football. The past 10 years of the NFL highlights how they have really shaped a change in the league and how that has trickled down to every level of football.
There is so much to unpack from a TE perspective that this is getting broken into two write ups with different emphasis from a blocking perspective and a receiving perspective here.
But, being fully honest with you, studying all the WR content and offensive line content that we have released is really in a lot of ways fully capable of aiding you and in many cases include info that can be an aid as well.
To get us started, we have instruction from Mike Judge, an offensive assistant for the Dolphins and new Head Coach for the Austin Peay Governors, Jeff Faris.
Just Like Jordan
Many coaches talk about studying basketball moves for receivers. The parallels in moves are uncanny and we constantly see the correlation when you really break down tape.
With this in mind, utilizing moves that allow us to take advantage of the size and strength of our TE’s is something we should strive for and the Jordan throw by is so popularized that you will find it talked about in each clinic. Jeff Faris details here.
Know where your advantages are presented and teach your athletes where they can take these advantages within a game scenario. Being stronger than a smaller athlete it is no mystery why this move works.
Back Shoulder
Building on the emphasis on size, a regular repetition of the back shoulder catch is a major tool in the TE toolbox. Coach Mike Judge details this for us.

The realization that this is quite possibly the best athlete on the field if developed correctly can change the game for you.
Are you going to invest the time to make the difference? Fully dive into these clinics and game more than just a receiving emphasis but, create a weapon for your team.
