Our HS Team of the Week Creates Balance Through Multiplicity

Oct 25, 2023 2:01 pm

Coach ,

Our Coaches Clinic High School Team of the Week is Beaumont HS (CA) led by Head Coach Jeff Steinberg.

Coach Steinberg has put together an offense that builds on a small set of components packaged to give a very diverse attack. That attack along with playing complementary football has the Cougars off to an 8-1 start heading into their final regular season game.

The Cougars are spreading the touches on offense to a number of skill players which also gives them a balanced attack.  The Cougars average  461 ypg and 42 ppg offensively while the defense is allowing just 12.6 ppg.

Here are the stat leaders on the offensive side of the ball:

QB Christopher Cooper

2597 Yards Passing. 170 completions in 245 attempts with 28 TD Passes/5 INT

Running backs

Myion Walker 68 carries  481 yards 8 TD's

Trashawn James-Reek 90 carries  545 yars 7 TD's

Top Receivers

DJ Littles   35 receptions  777 yards  7 TD's

Cleve Johnson 40 receptions 528 yards 3 TD's

Defensive Stats

25 sacks this season.

64 Tackles for loss this season.

Year Round QB Development

The offense benefits from strong QB play by Christopher Cooper. That development is something that the player and his coach have put a lot of work into. For Coach Steinberg, developing a quarterback behind a high powered passing attack is a year round process.

He’s put together multiple presentations on how he covers quarterback training in a 12 month plan.  He outlines that in this video:

Building Quick Game into the Attack

Coach Steinberg likes the high completion aspect of their quick game.  He stays away from quick game that must convert to a fade vs. press.  He likes to give the receiver the ability to convert a hitch to a 5 yard in and allow the QB against man coverage for a high completion throw.  He explains his approach to quick game here:

Using the Right Amount of RPO

For Coach Steinberg, incorporating RPO involves choosing the right amount which he will attach to the run game.  He likes the RPO because it inexpensive in they way the utilize already existing quick and screen game which they also use on their own.

He explains his philosophy on RPO here:

While Counter isn’t a main scheme for the Cougars, they will utilize it some with RPO.  For them it is a post snap RPO but the QB has a good understanding of what he will be doing before the ball is snapped.  Coach illustrates it on game film here:

Establishing the Run

For the Cougars, the run game starts with the zone running game.  It allows them multiplicity in how the schemes are used where they can block the box or incorporate the read game and RPO.  In the read game either the QB or the RB can be used as the inside runner in the way they designate their calls.

Coach Steinberg illustrates their inside zone run game with game film in this video:

Play Action Creates Balance

With a strong run game, the Cougars begin the passing attack by challenging dual responsibility players with play action. Boot/Naked is a big concept which allows them to get their QB attacking the edge of the defense away from the run. Teaching simple route rules to all skill players allows them to apply the rules to a variety of formations.  Here Coach Steinberg explains it out of a12 personnel Set.

That’s a few highlights of the way the Cougars like to attack a defense.  It allows them to spread the ball around to all of their recievers, tight ends, and running backs to create a balanced offense.

Good luck to Coach Steinbeg and and to you as well this week!

Always be growing!
