Learning from Coaches with New Logos - The Coaching Carousel Pt. 2

Dec 14, 2022 1:40 am

Coach ,

Before we share today’s ideas, we want to extend our heartfelt condolences to the Leach family, the Mississippi State football family, and the coaching community which has in some way been positively impacted by Coach Mike Leach. He was a one-of-a-kind and the game will miss him.

The carousel continues to spin and more moves have been made in the last few days.  We wish the coaches we mention in today’s article the best of luck and continued success in their new jobs.

Here’s the next round of changes we have to report and insight from each coach which was offered in our clinics.

Head Coaches

Pete Rossomando - Head Coach, Lamar

Peter Rossomando was the Offensive Line Coach for Charlotte this past season, and served as the interim Head Coach after Will Healy’s departure.

We can probably expect the philosophy he used to build his offensive line’s to be carried over to how he develops his own team. He shared this philosophy at Lauren’s First and Goal Clinic while he was the offensive line coach at Vanderbilt (click on image for video):

Coordinators

Ron Roberts, Defensive Coordinator, Auburn

Ron Roberts has been influential in the success of many programs. This is his first job in the SEC. What will the Auburn defense look like?

Well, you can expect multiplicity and you can expect them to create HAVOC. It’s a hallmark of Coach Robert’d defense. He explains his defensive philosophy in the first video clip and how he thinks about creating havoc in the second clip.

Ron English, Defensive Coordinator, Louisville

Coach English approaches everything with the idea, especially early on with a team or player, that it won’t look like you want it to right away. In this video clip, he shares the idea behind this philosophy and a story about NFL Hall of Famer Aeneas Williams - get better as you go (click on image for video):

Sean Lewis, Offensive Coordinator, Colorado

Coach Lewis did an outstanding job as the head coach of Kent State. Coach Lewis was the youngest head coach in the FBS when Kent State hired him six seasons ago.

Coach Lewis runs a hybrid of the Baylor offense with more of a power running game. Tempo is a part of it. They ran the fourth most plays in the FBS last year, with an incredibly high pace.

In addition, he knows how to build a strong culture. While a lot of that will be led by Coach Prime, he has a coach with a strong foundation as a culture builder. Here is Coach Lewis’s method for evaluating culture (click on image for video):

Position Coaches

Arizona State isn’t wasting time in building a staff, and head coach Kenny Dillingham has brought some excellent coaches to Tempe.

AJ Cooper - Linebackers, Arizona State

Coach Cooper was a standout defensive coach at Washington State. He spent the last three as “edges” coach and assumed duties as the defensive run game coordinator in 2022.

Under Coach Cooper's guidance, Washington State transformed its defense and had some of the most productive edge defenders in the Pac-12.

Here’s a drill he utilizes to train his edge players to get to the quarterback (click on image for video):

Jason Mohns, Tight Ends Coach, Arizona State

This is a move that has been coming for some time. I sat and listened to several FBS coaches sing the praises of Jason Mohns at Tony Franklin’s “OC Magic” in 2019.

He won seven state titles as the head coach of Saguaro High School and finished as the runner-up in Arizona this past week.

He’s very organized and detailed on how he runs an offense and he certainly lends more expertise than what he will bring to developing the tight ends.

Here’s a clip of him teaching Unbalanced RPO (click on image for video):

Saga Tuitele, Offensive Line Coach, Arizona State

Coach Tuitele was part of a Mountain West Championship with the Fresno State Bulldogs.

Coach Tuitele spoke at the first annual Lauren’s First and Goal Clinic on the inside zone play. For him, offensive line play starts with giving his players a toolbox as he explains here:

Again, congratulations to all of these coaches on their new opportunities. We look forward to learning more football during this clinic season.

Always be growing!
