Coach,

We continue sharing insight from coaching staffs of the preseason Top 25 and today's focus is on Texas. I am excited about what they have been doing in this program and expect them to move up the ranks as the season rolls on. Coach Jeremiah Johnson put together today's breakdown.

Season Preview Capsule

#18 Texas is coming off of an average year for the Longhorns and are are looking to excel this fall. With the conference change in the near future it is imperative that the Longhorns start firing on all cylinders.

The Longhorns coaching staff believes that the culture of Longhorn football will propel them into this next season and that it will be the driving force that allows them to be successful this season and going into the SEC in 2024.

The Longhorns have built a strong culture since Coach Sarkisian has taken over.  That coupled with a strong pool of talent assembled in recruiting have the Longhorns positioned to reach their goals in 2023.

Three Phases of a Athletes life

Coach Sarkisian believes that as coaches it is our job to put our players in the best position possible to be successful in all aspects of their lives. Those aspects of life or phases of life are Football, Academics, Personal/social.

These phases are intertwined and separate at the same time. When everything is going well all aspects are running smoothly and efficiently. However when one is out of whack it affects the other two. Our job as coaches is to observe if our athletes are having problems and help them through them in any way we can.

In knowing this we should find opportunities to help our athletes in these areas even before a problem arises.

What it takes to be disciplined

Coach Sarkisian also believes that being disciplined is one of the most important characteristics a coach and a player could have. Discipline carries over habits to the game. If your players can’t be on time, dress in the uniform of the day, stay behind the line when they are supposed to.

How are you supposed to build a culture that will allow you to be the best you can be? You won't be able to. Sarkisian believes in his offense and defensive schemes and how they have helped him to be a successful coach but they only work because he has guys who can be trusted and guys would have discipline that run the schemes.

Discipline is the number one factor when building a culture. It should start with the coaches then the guys in positions of authority on the team and then to the newest guy on the team. Discipline is not something that your team either has or it doesn't. It is something that can be taught and how it is taught is first by showing the example through your actions first.

In this video Coach Sark explainsg the Longhorn discipline.

All Gas No Brakes

“All gas no brakes” is the motto for the Texas culture. It gives the players the mentality that we are not stopping for anything. This is the way the Texas culture is and you either buy in or get off.

If you have a culture that you want to build and execute you need the all gas no brakes mentality. There will be people that do not fit into the culture that you have and that is ok. You want people that think the same when it comes to culture to get the best benefit of having a culture for your team.

Here is Coach Sarkisian taking about the All Gas No Breaks motto

As Coaches we need to understand the three phases of an athlete's life. In doing this we will understand our players better and it will give them the ability to see that you care about them as a person, not just an athlete. We then need to be disciplined in our approach to our job and coaching them to be the same about themselves.

Finally we need to have the all gas no brakes mentality in our team. Starting from the coaches down to the newest guy on the team. If you follow these principles you can have a culture that is unbeatable and your team will be the most efficient team they can be.

Always Learning!
