Montana State - Developing Hybrids to Add Power to Your Offense

Apr 03, 2023 12:16 pm

Coach ,

When it comes to running the football the Montana State Bobcats were #2 in 2022 with 311.9 yards per game.

They identify their offense as a Poower Spread Running Attack.

A big part of that is the hybrid tight end position. It’s a position that is a weapon for the Bobcats that can block and catch the ball in the passing game.

This starts out with epxpectations as to how the player and the person is developed. Coach Tyler Walker explains this in the following video (click on image for video):

Hone in on techniques and fundamentals and execut those at a high level. It starts with getting things right before the ball starts. Having a clearly defined pre snap process sets the Hybrid up for success. Coach Walker calls those “triple A’s” and he explains those and the pre snap process here:

Using hybrid’s is about creating match-ups and getting a bigger but still athletic body on either a less athletic body or a smaller body. When you can add more of these hybrids together it can enhance the mnismatches even more. Those blocks must be worked and Coach Walker covers those in “Power Pair Combos” where the two hybrids work together on their different run scheme assignments. He illustrates those in this video:

Power Read

A productive scheme for the Bobcats which utliizes these hybrids to create great match-ups for blocking on the perimeter is Power Read.

Offensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator Brian Armstrong uses Power Read as a way of getting the ball on the perimeter. With their motions, it fits their personnel and the motions marry well with IZ, giving consistency for OL. It creates a “same as” with their A-Gap Power

They are able to get the ball outside in space without having to set an edge.

Coach Armstrong explains it here:

Any play that is effective becomes more effective with simple adjustments. Coach Armstrong illustrates some of those here on game film (click on image for video):

As offenses continue to evolve, more and more hybrid type of players are finding their way onto the field. Montana State provides a great example of how these players can be developed and utllized to create a top performing offense.

Always be growing!
