Coach Excellence Day 48 - It all starts with a great staff

Coach ,
The one thing we probably miss most about live clinics is the networking and meeting new coaches who are willing to share their ideas to help you get better.
One of those coaches I met a few years ago at a clinic in Orlando was a guy from all away across the country, Jeff Steinberg. Coach Steiny is a long-time coach who has done an outstanding job at every program he’s coached. He’s someone I have continued to keep contact with and learn from.
One aspect of being a head coach that is so critical to the success of a program is hiring and maintaining a coaching staff. We are exactly at that time of the year where we either need to evaluate and make changes on our staff for the better, or replace a coach who was able to step up into a new opportunity.
Coach Steiny has some great perspective on hiring assistants. For him there are three non-negotiable characteristics that an assistant coach must possess. He shares it in this video:
A big part of this is that the head coach shares his vision and gets buy in from coaches because that assistant must sell that vision. Coach Steiny points out that the coach must be able to do his best sales job at home.
Steiny always believes in focusing on the positive. He shares much more in his course Friday Night Lights - Practice, Preparation, and Planning to Build a Year Round Program.
What I love about this challenging time is that coaches continue to find ways to help each other grow.
Coach Steiny has put together a unique clinic, “The Head Coach Academy.” It features an incredible lineup of head football coaches who have proven success on the field and have transformed lives along the way. The virtual clinic will run January 23rd & 24th. You can check out the line-up here.
Always be growing!
