Protect your RPO game with the tried and true Curl-Flat

Coach ,

I met Jason Mohns 5 years ago and he has impressed not only me, but others with his knowledge of the game and his innovative mindset.

I attended Tony Franklin’s OC Magic in 2019 where Jason was the only non-FBS coach on the line-up. Herb Hand said,  “I’m so fired up for you, dude. One day I hope I work for you. You’ve got it figured out, dude.” Franklin added later, “If you’re going to overhaul your whole system, go do what he does. No wonder he scores 50 points a game.”

It’s no surprise that he can take a simple tried and true concept like “Curl-Flat” and get more mileage out of it.

Mohns explains the benefits of running the Curl/Flat Concept:

  • The Curl/Flat is a go to Cover 3 beater
  • Modern defenses are playing more post safety/cover 3 looks to cover down on receivers and take away the RPO’s
  • Great man-beater variations vs Cover 1
  • Creates a horizontal stretch on the defense
  • Stress2 underneath defenders with 3 pass catchers
  • Can be run from mirrored 2x2, 3x1or from 2-back looks
  • Great way to pick on weak curl/flat defenders from a run action look

With teams playing more man to neutralize the RPO, it’s wise to have concept variations that attack man coverage.  That’s exactly what Mohns explains in a third of his clinic.

The man variation has become a staple in their offense because of seeing a heavy dose of cover 3 and man coverages.  The number 3 receiver who normally runs an “Over the Ball Route” will run a “Pipe” route threatening vertically immediately. #2 will run the flat and #1 the curl. On the backside the speed in with a check-swing puts stress on the weak curl-flat.

The post safety becomes the key indicator for where the quarterback should take his progression. If he works to the Pipe then of course the boundary Speed in and Swing combo is what the QB will work.

If it’s a 2 safety look, the boundary safety becomes the key indicator. If he roles to the middle to protect against the Pipe, again, the weak curl/flat defender is stressed with a high-low of the Speed in and the Swing.

Coach Mohns details the curl-flat concept and how he uses it to create horizontal stretch on the defense. The course provides philosophy for why the curl-flat concept is a valuable offensive scheme, and provides play cards and cut-ups to help you seamlessly install this concept into your offense. He also diagrams and explains his variations to defeat man coverage, and how he uses motion-indicators, and formations to add "window-dressing" to this staple concept.

He gives an overview of the concept in this video (click image).
