The "FBI Packet" - Building Football Intelligence

Dalton Hilliard, defensive backs coach at UConn, shared his plan for building culture, teaching, and developing technique at the 3rd Annual Lauren’s First and Goal Clinic.
He begins his teaching with the premise of fighting the human condition (FTHC) noting that human beings are conditioned to survive. He wants growth from his players both as athletes and as people.
He explains FTHC here:
He takes a unique approach to how he develops his players over a 12 week period during the off season.
He builds a virtual playbook that he uses in the classroom. He will then take that and project a formation on the screen and it serves for an interactive meeting with his players communicating in a controlled environment and allowing him to teach their adjustments.
As part of what he calls “FBI Packet” which stands for Football Intelligence. He talks about football with his players with a focus weekly. Here is 12 week curriculum:
Week 1: Backfield Sets
Week 2: Formations
Week 3: Personnels
Week 4: Motions
Week 5: Field Awareness
Week 6: Press-Man Techique
Week 7: Off-Man Technique
Week 8: Route Concepts
Week 9: Route Concepts
Week 10: Film Study
Week 11: Film Study
Week 12: Film Study
In addition to the football stuff, he gave his players a link to a podcast and assigned one for each week. These are topics which help his players become successful in life. He wants them to be a better version of themselves when they leave the program. He talks about how this works in this video:
We have gone through three years now of an avalanche of information on the game. It’s helpful hearing more and more about how coaches best do their job in teaching, coaching and developing their players.
Thank you to Coach Hilliard for sharing these ideas!
Always be growing!
