Spoiler alert: Though this clinic was about the offensive line coach, everything shown and explained is a template for good coaching and teaching.

At the Annual C.O.O.L. Clinic, Jon Gruden delivered this entertaining and educational presentation on "What I Look for When Hiring an Offensive Line Coach."

Coach Gruden took us through every aspect of what he looks for which is a lot!  From characteristics of the individual to specific knowledge and how to put it all together to get it from the chalk board to the grass, Coach Gruden left no stone unturned in delivering everything needed from this critical hire. 



He explains what characteristics he looks for in this video. Of course this applies to any position coach (click on image for video):

This presentation will give you a strong understanding of how to prepare yourself as a position coach. The concept of what is covered here certainly applies to any position coach on the field. It will make you think about what you believe and how you go about your job.  It provides a template of the things you should be thinking about going into an interview as well as what good coaching looks like!

Coach Gruden is the consummate teacher of the game, and the presentation also serves as a prime example of how to present knowledge in a way which makes concepts both clear as well as memorable. This can serve as a template for putting together your own dynamic teaching presentations for your players.

Here’s an example of how he does it. He does have bullets on the screen which he reads, he certainly discusses those points, but he uses a “show, don’t tell” approach as he makes his ideas come to life with videos examples of exactly what he is talking about (click on image for video):

When it comes to finding something that works and using it in my own coaching, I made a living on doing that. So there was a time that bullets and explanations of them worked, but we are I highly visual society and the mode of getting a point across is short video clips.

I can say after seeing how Coach Gruden did this I thought, “This is the new way of presenting information.” I encourage you to make the move to presenting this way. Move away from bullets and let the video do the work for you.

This is definitely a clinic that is worth the watch!
