Coach ,

It has been an exciting beginning to the college season, and Week 3 is shaping up to be another!

This week the featured match-up has a team working to re-establish itself as a national powerhouse in #13 Miami, and #24 Texas A&M looking to bounce back after a loss to a very tough App State team.

Let’s look at what we can learn from some of the coaches in this match-up!

#13 Miami Hurricanes

Miami made some big moves starting with bringing back former Hurricane Mario Cristobal, who helped lead the University of Miami to two national championships in 1989 and 1991 as a standout offensive lineman.

Coach Cristobal brought in Offensive Coordinator Josh Gattis who helped Michigan to the FBS Playoffs. Coach Gattis is quickly establishing the Hurricanes' offense. The rankings show it:

#3 in 3rd Down Conversions at .667

#7 in Scoring at 50ppg

#14 in Passing Efficiency 172.05

#16 Total Offense with 518 ypg

#16 in Rushing at 239.5 ypg

He shares how he Builds an Offensive Identity in this clinic presentation for the Louisiana Football Coaches Association.

Coach Gattis explains why building that identity is so important in this video:

Alex Mirabel comes over with Coach Cristobal from Oregon and brings his expertise to Miami and the Wide Zone will be a big part of it.  He shared their Wide Zone Fundamentals and Techniques in his COOL Clinic presentation.

It starts up front, and a play that OL Coach Alex Mirabal loves is the Wide Zone play. He has a pair of talented blockers to help get play going on the edge with OT Zion Nelson and TE Will Mallory.

The Wide Zone provides an attack that distorts the defensive front. It provides an attack that distorts the defensive front. Oregon Offensive Line Coach Alex Mirabal teaches the techniques that allow the Hurricanes to utilize the scheme successfully, including the Gallop technique

Technique is important to the success of the play and Coach Mirabal shares two techniques they use on their zone schemes, the double under and gallop technique (click on image for video):

The “Gallop” technique is an important component for the offensive line in running a successful Wide Zone play. Coach Mirabel illustrates it on scrimmage film in this video (click on image for video):

#23 Texas A&M Aggies

The Aggies were upset at home by a tough App State team, and they look to bounce back against Miami.

This highly-touted recruiting class will need to continue to learn to play ball the Aggie Way. To get a team back on track, Coach Jimbo Fisher will have to get the Aggies to have a championship mentality in practice.  He explains his philosophy here (click on image for video):

Coming away from the Red Zone trips with points, especially touchdowns will be critical if the Aggies want to bring down the Hurricanes. That starts with a clear understanding of what actually affects the game. Coach Fisher explains here (click on image for video):

Video: Philosophy on What Actually Affects the Game

The best part of this season so far is that every weekend, there are takeaways from these games that can help you and your team this season. Seeing the philosophy, strategy, and techniques in the clinic presentations and then how they shake out on the field provides plenty of opportunity to learn.

Always be Growing!
